USC vs. USC

Apparently the University of South Carolina is not, officially, USC.

USC is the University of Southern California.

So we need to trademark SMU so Singapore Management can't use its likeness?

this season played out pretty much exactly as expected, with the exception of beating TCU at their place. We beat the lower echelon teams we needed to beat and lost road games to Tulsa, USM and Houston. Hoped to beat either UCF or Navy (did not expect both) at home and possibly sneak out a road win (Tulsa?). Fact that TCU turned out to be the road win makes this a season that you could arguably make a case for this team overachieving

I didnt do everything as a fan i could have done to help - bring more people, talk it up, stay through every game, cheer louder and influence others - and i will try to do those things in the future.

I hope the coaches are asking themselves the same thing - what can we do to get this closer to great? Lets invest in a kicker, make sure we are deep enough at QB, get a signal system like every other team in america, maybe call the high percentage play more often instead of the quirky ego call, try to engrain myself with the local traditions and culture and fans instead of clinging to our useless polynisian past, work the recruiting trail a little harder. They need to prove their staff and system can go big time - which they have not proven yet.

And SMU athletic admin - lets achkownledge we have to invest more in tutors, give June more recruiting budget, commit to an IPF and spend some money on sales and promotions. That will help us get there also.

who says we were supposed to beat tulsa? you?

This is exactly what June has done in less than 24 hours. He's already set low expectations so now a lot of other people are on board with that philosophy.

I can't and won't accept it. This program should be reaching a zenith if he and his staff were...

Mitch, CFM and I have been saying this for a long time. June has just conformed it. You could see it a mile away with the upcoming schedules.

You are on point. I would add that I believe that JJ's biggest downfall, in what I consider an otherwise successful tenure, is that he hasn't been able to find the right QB yet. Who knows what might have happened had June been able to bring in Gilbert and nurture him instead of feeding him to the lions as happened at UT?

The record is good but what is shocking is the lack of recruiting of offensve players from high schools who are contributing after four years of June. Only one Jones high school offensive recruit from Texas is making an onfield impact and his off-field stuff has been a drag. 7 of 11 Bennet recruits or committs started on offense this year after 4 years of recruiting! Line was a lb in hi school, McDermott a transfer/shawnbrey transfer. i thought they would be recruiting Texas bigtime but something is terribly wrong when it comes to them attracting top Texas high school offensive players. anybody know what the problem is?

Your quote from the article is misleading; this says that the Los Angeles USC gets to keep an SC logo and the South Carolina USC can't use that logo anymore.

It doesn't say South Carolina is not USC.

8-4 was a reasonable goal for this team. They missed by one game, and are going to their third straight bowl game for only the second time in SMU history. Not bad at all. There's your context.

JT - Amen.. agree with your message and context. I enjoy and don't have expectations (someone once said that). Know we can be better but also know we've been much worse. Looking forward to bowl game (3rd one in a row) and to an improving program.

DEF points us to a recent appeals court (federal circuit) ruling that held that the University of South Carolina cannot use the letters USC on its sports uniforms because the University of Southern California already claims those letters. Seriously. It's hard to see how this makes much sense at all. USC is an accurate acronym for both schools, and it makes no sense to limit it.

In an amazingly obnoxious gloating victory note, the lawyer for the USC from California "suggested that the letters were more deservedly linked to the Trojans' warrior image than to 'a goofy little chicken,'" by which he meant the logo of the South Carolina teams. The lawyer for the USC from the east coast noted that "Southern manners" kept him from responding to that point.
