Pelini Bro To Replace King Howard At FAU

Post by huskerpony »

Rumor from former husker players is that Mike Stoops will replace Carl as DC at Nebraska. (Although that was before Urban Meyer offered him a job too, but no one knows if he was offered a co-DC job or just an assistant job at Ohio St)

Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini has been offered the Florida Atlantic job and is expected to accept the position, sources told CBSSports.com.
The 46-year old Pelini is the brother of Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini. Carl Pelini will replace Howard Schnellenberger, who announced his retirement before the season.

Carl Pelini has been Nebraska’s defensive coordinator since 2008. Before that Pelini was defensive line coach at Ohio from 2005-07, defensive coordinator at Minnesota State in 2004 and a Nebraska graduate assistant in 2003.

From 1987-2002, Pelini was a high school coach in Ohio, except for three seasons (1889-91) as a Kansas State graduate assistant and restricted earnings coach.

This will be Pelini’s first head coaching job since 2002 when he was at Austintown’s Fitch High School in Ohio.

Florida Atlantic (1-10) concludes its season Saturday at home against Louisiana-Monroe

So does this mean maybe you guys won't go exclusive 4 man front and deep coverage and allow Denard Robinson to absolutely kill you? Or is that all Bo's call? I mean it'll be tougher in Lincoln, but there is no doubt in my mind who had a better football team on the field a couple weeks ago. It wasn't Brady Hoke. Denard Robinson can and will KILL you if you let him like Nebraska did, it's textbook Big 8 football, sell out to beat the run and let him get what he can in the passing game. However.... Denard will do what he does....

Denard was very good, no doubt, but fumbles at the 20, 30, and a blocked punt at the 50 had a lot to do with the score getting that out of control.

As for the defensive scheme, that's been Bo's scheme all along. He likes to have the linemen play 2-gap and run bracket coverage in the backfield. Worked really well when the linemen were Suh and Crick. Not as great when Suh graduated. Didn't work at all after Crick got hurt. They had zero pass rush and the mobile qb's killed them because the linebackers couldn't contain them. (See the differnece between Mich, Wisc, NW and 1st half of OSU games vs. Mich St., Iowa, and OSU with Bauserman in.)

So that is everyone's question here. They didn't seem to adapt their scheme to the players they had this year or for the different offenses in the B1G. Hard to know if the young guys filling in were just young, if they need to get some juco transfers who can play 2-gap, or if they need to modify what they are doing. That's a bit above my pay grade. I was just a dumb o-lineman.

Also something to be said for having to prepare for 11 new teams this year. The game plan in a couple of games was pretty baffling. Northwestern in particular. Same thing happened their first year against Missouri and Oklahoma, but they had it figured out the next time around.

Either way I'm VERY glad to have a Program the likes of Nebraska join the B1G. And I WILL be cheering for the Huskers in their Bowl game. I mean Nebraska truly has only one natural rival in the league and that's us Iowa be damned, based on my team's history vs yours which seem to peak in the same years..Including the Greatest Game Never Played back in 98. And the Alamo Bowl Fiasco in '05 or '06 I think? However Nebraska (for now) is a rival that I only respect and do not hate. Similar to how I feel about Alabama.

Go Huskers. Till we see you again of course.

BTW I played Center on O but I was Much better on Defense at Tackle so I'm really no football analyst BUT it's all about blowing up the point of attack and that is where every game of football has ever been won, ever and will always be won. Any Lineman knows that. But if you are almost dead even, a dude that runs's a 4.3 like say Denard Robinson um, well, umm yeah. Don't give him too many chances. But you knew that.
