Dare to dream

Postby ClassOf81 » Tue Nov 30, 2004 8:38 pm

Ty Willingham had secured 11 commitments before he was canned, including two from Texans. I know some will shoot holes in my idea, but a 6.5 WR who runs a 4.4 and a fast LB deserve a phone call, in my opinion. What can it hurt?

David Bruton DB 5.5 6-2/180 35 Miamisburg, OH
Martin Frierson WR 5.4 6-2/185 NR Irmo, SC
David Grimes WR 5.5 5-9/157 61 Detroit, MI
Brandon Harrison DB 5.8 5-8/190 15 Dayton, OH
Joey Hiben TE 5.7 6-5/235 11 Waconia, MN
David Nelson WR 5.6 6-5/195 44 Wichita Falls, TX
Asaph Schwapp RB 5.4 6-0/247 NR Hartford, CT
Evan Sharpley QB 5.6 6-2/200 12 Marshall, MI
Scott Smith LB 5.6 6-3/222 16 Highland Park, IL
Kevin Washington LB 5.6 6-0/213 35 Sugar Land, TX
Lawrence Wilson DE 5.7 6-6/230 13 Akron, OH

I would think Urban Meyer (or whoever Notre Dame hires) will be all over these guys, but if I remember right, Nelson had us on his list before he committed to ND. Surely we've called him by now, right?

Nelson plays for Wichita Falls Rider which is still alive in the playoffs so his recruitment, should he decide to decommit, will be delayed. As for recruiting JC players at certain positions I've always believed that I could care less if SMU's coaches recruited 0 JUCOs or a handful as long as it was their choice and the option was freely availiable to the coaching staff to select the recruit who could help the program the most. The Law of Natural Selection. We certainly shouldn't turn away ANY outstanding freshman recruit at any position. And believe me we won't. The issue becomes more important though on the players choosen to fill out the class. SMU has hurt itself because we have denied our coaching staffs the OPTION to select from a entire new pool of potential outstanding recruits signed by our competitors even though the pool of remaining freshman recruits included largely longshots. Recruiting JCs is the same as recruiting freshman in that you need quality JC recruits not just warm bodies.

Didn't realize Rider was still alive.
Sure would be nice to add another WR with Nelson's size, though.
Anyone know about that linebacker?

David Nelson's WF Rider team was eliminated last night by Aledo, 40-35. Nelson caught 6 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Blake Szymanski had a terrific passing night, completing 23-of-36 passes for 351 yards, 0 interceptions and four passing touchdowns, and he also ran for a score.

Rivals says David Nelson also de-committed from Notre Dame. The site says he's now considering Kansas State, Nebraska, Notre Dame (still?), Oklahoma State, Colorado, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
