I will be upset if June leaves

Post by Pony94 »

MY first SMU game was the Vandy SMU game in 1990. As I recall, it rained almost all of the game, but I loved the atmosphere...and when we won, I thought it was the greats thing ever. Little did I know that over the next 18 years, I would rarely see another home win. Between 1990 and 2007, SMU won 56 games...throw in one more if you want to include 2008. Even though we lost, in 2003 when I moved back to Dallas, I got season tickets and found I loved the game....hearing the band, watching Peruna run across the field...and oh yeah, I believe our stadium is one of the nicest around. But year after year, we lost and lost and lost.

Then in 2008, we hired June. Was I disappointed with the 1-11 his first year...sure, I thought he could cure blindness. Well, we are on our way to a third season of at least 7 wins...think about that. Between 1990 and 1992 we had seven wins, between 1993 and 1996, we had 8 wins, between 2001 and 2004 we had a whopping 10 wins.

WE ARE NOT CURED. WE ARE LIKE AN ALCOHOLIC (and I know some of you guys know what I mean) THAT HAS HAD A FEW MONTHS OF SOBRIETY.

June brought instant credibility. If he leaves, the next coach does not necessarily have that street cred! And frankly, if June does leave, its not the COC's fault, I dont think it's the administration's fault, I think it will be the FAN's fault.

June understood coming in here, that it would be tough to change the culture, the players would be a challenge, the administration would be a challenge, but I dont think he ever thought the fans would be the biggest challenge.

SHAME ON US....shame on all of you that sit out on the BLVD and never even come inside. I know most of us here are hardcore fans, but we all know the others that keep drinking on the BLVD. If June stays, we need to do more to get the people out on the BLVD into the stadium.

PONY UP....Please stay June!

Oh...and YES, I wish we had made more progress, and yes I hate the full grown mustangs, and yes, I hate the QB running to the sidelines and yes I have been dissappointed in the r&s....but, WE ARE NOT 1-11 OR 3-9 ANY MORE!!!!!

well said. If JJ and his staff bail on the program, it will have been because he feels like he took this thing as far as he could...meaning....he could not get enough of our students, alumni and casual Dallas sports fans interested in the program to show the support and enthusiasm needed to attract top recruits.

nobody on this board's fault...but too bad we don't have more classmates and former classmates who care about SMU athletics.

I will be very upset if he leaves this year. I will be fine if he leaves once Eddie Printz has enrolled here as by then I think we will have sustainable success. I agree we are not there yet.

Look - if it is true then we will be fine. THis is a great job now -

June's main accomplishments have been getting our admissions problems fixed and our tutoring fixed - with those two things we can compete in the B.E. The winning has been great - but 6-7 wins vs CUSA is not that hard to replace - but it is impossible to replace without admissions and tutoring being fixed.

We need to hire a fun young-gun who will actually WORK hard - save about 500k on salary and split it between Klemm and Mason to make them stay. THis could actually be fun and be to our benefit.

Ask TCU how it felt when Dennis F left.

I too will be disappointed if June leaves-we had such abysmal records for years and finally are .500 plus with 3 bowls in a row and now Mitch Mc Connell and his ilk are trying to run him off. I would let potbellied pigs roam the sidelines in addition to the geldings before I would go back to pre-Jones years since DP.

Nick - I like reading what you have to say man and enjoy your posts, but why is this your response to anyone who thinks that we are going to go back into obscurity if JJ leaves (which I think is a valid fear)? Like someone posted above, we really aren't too far removed from being one of the worst football programs in the entire country. Having 3 solid seasons in a row doesn't make me confident enough that we are guaranteed to continue improving.

The only thing that gives me hope right now is the CoC and their dedication to making this thing work.

Why, how bout this...

Administration has made committment to athletics
Big east confer next week
Tons of $$$ around here and people that want to win
Great location for future coaches and family
Great amenities for future coaches.
Excellent university continuing to trend higher nationally

I'm extremely bullish on all things SMU...

So far I have been pretty dead on, just like when everyone was saying we had nothing to offer bcs conference...

SMU is Dallas' flagship university and with that comes a lot of good things. If you think Dallas is moving up they need us to go with them.

See....northwestern, Stanford, vandy, USC, Boston college, Miami, ect.

I think those are all great points. I would hope that the CoC would be able to bring in another "high power" guy and ensure that the school continues to make a commitment to athletics. A guaranteed move to the Big east would make me a feel a lot better. I am just getting SMT-like with all these insane rumors of Orsini leaving, JJ leaving, all our recruits leaving, the big east falling apart etc... I should stop reading the board for a few days...

But as long as the school stays committed to athletics, we clearly have a lot to offer.

As a side note, this sh*t pisses me off that it has to occur prior to our bowl game. JJ made such a big deal about not having our negotiations interfere with the Sugar Bowl, but he has no problem with these rumors floating around for 2 years in a row now. Give me a f--king break.

I would just be worried that a less established, young up and comer, might not have as much pull with the school and in ensuring that the school fulfills all of his wishes.
