Jones writing for DMN now?

Post by mr. pony »

Check out this note that appears today with the SMU-Pitt bowl match-up:

SMU did not play in a bowl until the arrival of June Jones, who has guided the Mustangs to three straight.

I promise you, Jones thinks this.

It would appear that SMU has never been to a bowl...or existed prior to 1989.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I would like to see the article to check the quote. Mr Pony can twist things when he wants to try to make June look bad. Notice he did not put a link.

C'mon I can understand the frustrations given our expectations and future ones as well, but its pretty hard to argue that he didnt bring up bowl bound 3 times... If you have to here is the chart:

2008- No bowl, JJ
2009- Hawaii bowl, JJ
2010- AFB, JJ
2011- BBVA, JJ

Everything prior 2008 not even close.

JJ was right guy at right time...Cant state this more than the 150 times i stated it, no one was a bigger fan.

He was good in that he excited fans, and esp board of trustees, lloyd, sewel, and ford esp.

Guys who want SMU football to succeed and will do so at all costs...These guys pressured RGT to lower standards and build infrastructure. For this I will be thankful that he came.

However no previous coach since DP has been given so much, could rossley, gregg, caven, bennet been successful with these amenities, not sure, but I think they could have been better.

Half of d1 makes a bowl, and with our location, amenities, and schedule we should always be there.

So now that those things are in place, and with lloyd, ford, C of C, ect. I am pretty sure whoever comes in will be as successful if not more...

It is a very similar situation to TCU with francione and patterson...

You think they are crying for franchione to come back?

Stop acted like this guy is a football god...he really hasnt been a very good x's and o'x coach, cant get his offense to perform at all, hasnt been able to recruit a qb, or recruit the local area.

In fact, without 1 guy on our staff we would still be grabbing krappy recruits...

We have a lot to offer and we are trending up with or without this guy...but we have allowed him to come in, spit on traditions, be marginal, not work hard, and then he tells us we suck as fans, I'm sure that will bring more in.

Not to mention the timing of his last 2 coaching stops, 5 days before bowl and during most important recruiting weekend.

These recruits love AK and would follow AK whereever he goes not JJ...

I don't twist ANYTHING. There was no article. It's a chart with DMN comments after each match-up. I quoted it word-for-word. I don't appreciate being called a liar, punk.

Also I would never say anybody is a god in any way shape or form. I just dont want people to toss him off to the side without at least giving him credit, which you did for some part of it. I have been stating that in an equitable decision would just let him retire or ask to leave later in his contract and go out and get someone that takes a team from average to greatness. I think with June for now, we can continue to make reforms and keep the anti-football faculty at bay. I know any coach would be slightly hesistant to just jump over with this much friction in our culture. I also think with JJ we will continue down the path of bowl bound, and wait for the right time to make that switch to get to BCS bowl bound state.

Probably referring to the BCS style bowl games. But again, if that wasnt the intention, it is known as Bevo Corp. Anything run by Bevo sucks.

Nick, I agree with some of your comments, but last time I checked, we DO suck as fans. What has been average attendance at football games during this and the past 3 seasons? The boulevard has more people in it than Ford Stadium on game day. That's because we DO suck as fans. SMU football attendance never has been impressive most years since I came to school here in 1970. It was OK at best during some of the Ron Meyer & Bobby Collins years, but still sub-par considering that the team was winning a lot more then.

So who would you replace JJ with? Which hallmark coach do you think is going to race to the hilltop like there was no tomorrow and immerse himself in the be all end all nirvana that is SMU?
