Burger wars, re-visited

[No Quarter]

I'd like to see the self sacrificing team leave burgers alone for a year or two and take up other important issues: tacos (down hown authentico and sympatico Mexican as well as upscale North Dallas), barbeque, chili, maybe even fried chicken.

And Cowtown should definitely be visited since they have Babes (Youngblood Fried Chicken recipe) and a downtown BBQ with the sauce recipe from Big Apple (or was it Red Apple) that used to be near the stockyard.

Wow...y'all have some great ideas. Don't know if I can afford the new wardrobe a taco war would produce. I think I can safely say that all suggestions will be given serious consideration. Football, food and drink...what more could anyone want?

*UPDATE*UPDATE*UPDATE: Well, I have to let ya'll know that I went to Snookie's on Oak Lawn this past Friday for lunch and had the half pound cheeseburger...MOST EXCELLENT! I told the manager that his restaurant had been claimed BEST BURGER IN DALLAS by the posters on <A HREF="http://www.ponyfans.com." TARGET=_blank>www.ponyfans.com.</A> He said, "That's nice. What is that?" OMG! You mean to tell me that NONE OF YOU HAS TOLD THIS RESTAURANT ABOUT ITS HONOR???? This needs to be corrected! I told him that SMU fans think that Snookie's is THE BEST BURGER in Dallas, by far. And that he needs to support SMU athletics Maybe he'll take an ad out in the football/basketball programs! (Hint, hint! to anyone in the sales office!)

This isn't an official submission, of course, since the crew wasn't assembled. However, I recently made a journey to Baja Oklahoma, to the Fox & Hound at Midway & Rosemeade.

Remember, this is not a restaurant - this is a bar that also serves food. With that in mind, my expectations for their burger weren't that high. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The meat itself was very flavorful, and the wheat bun was lightly toasted and fresh.

Going to the Fox & Hound on a Friday night is not exactly conducive to getting orders with any specific requests. Therefore, asking for something to be left off (in my case: pickles) is above and beyond what can be expected. And don't bother asking for your burger to be cooked a specific way. On busy nights, I got the impression they cook a burger one way and one way only (medium rare) and you take what you get. Asking them to take it back might have meant waiting another hour or 4. So after accepting that F&H is not Burger King (meaning you get the burger the way THEY want to cook it, not the way you want it), it was fairly enjoyable. Toppings were pretty fresh.

Best thing about it: lots of TVs with games on. Not a ringing endorsement, I realize, but not bad.

I've noticed that Fox and Hounds are fairly good places to go if you don't have a good alternative. Having to spend a lot of time in Flower Mound over the last year or so, I have adopted the Fox and Hound in Lewisville as my place to watch sporting events, grab a beer and even eat food. They have a few Golden tees, dart boards, lots of pool tables and a helluvalot of TV's. The menu is a bit pricy, but the food quality overall is good.

Probably the best thing out of everything else is the mug club, where you can have a mug named something. My mug is named Peruna.

Coincidentally, I was thinking about this yesterday. PK said several times that he would like to get together sometime and have a burger without having to rate it. So, anyone up for a Point Burger this weekend? Its been a little more than a year since we started the war, we could call it a reunion.

This Kansas State fan hasn't looked at this thread since about Christmas. I felt a need to revisit the Burger Wars and am thankful for the insight offered by all.

You have me Jonesin' for some quality ground beef now, and I may have to take a trip down SMU way in the next year or so and hit a few spots. There are a few excellent places in Kansas, but like so many in this thread, you have to be in the know.

Now, if you guys do start another war, I would be very pleased to see something involving BBQ (something to round out my culinary cravings when I do head down Dallas way).

I'll put in my vote now: In the Dallas area, Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse. 'Nuff said!

If you ever have a chance to travel down I-45 to Houston, you HAVE to stop in Huntsville and eat at New Zion Baptist Church's BBQ Stand. It's world famous. In fact, it was pictured in the latest edition of American Heritage Magazine. It's run by the church ladies and it's incredible! Make sure you order quickly because the line is out the door every day at lunch! And seating is VERY limited! It's open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11-1:30 for LUNCH ONLY! And the little ol' lady behind the counter doesn't put up with any you-know-what from any smart alecks, either! In fact, legend has it that she once threw the ENTIRE Texas A&M football team out of the place when they got too rowdy!

I'm glad to see such enthusiasm already. I will be looking for a job with the National Archives system next year (I intern this summer) and the Dallas area will be my second choice of locations for a job. If I end up in the region (or visit), I'll make sure I save any work the group does to work as my "official unofficial guide" to the areas BBQ and Burgers.
