I hope SMU fans start thinking like this soon...
Just wanted to share a great post from a USM fan about their bowl destination. For those that don't know, USM AD (or coach Fedora, depending on who you ask) chose Hawaii Bowl over Ticketcity vs PSU. This has ruffled quite a few feathers with players, fans, alums, etc., who wanted to play a big time opponent after winning CUSA. The Liberty Bowl will not have a cusa team this year.
This is the post:
With all due respect, you don't really understand the situation. A program like USM expects a bowl game from day 1 of spring camp. It isn't a reward to them, its normal. It's what happens when you're part of a program that has several (can't remember the number) seasons ongoing of a consecutive bowl streak. It's not a vacation. It's a football game. I think the players wanted an opportunity to play the best team available.

ps - the poster was not replying to me, but to a Memphis fan. Thus the "you don't understand" language.
We obviously understand as we're going to our 3rd straight bowl.

I think a game vs. Pitt was the best choice for us rather than Nola or St Pete vs a Sun Belt team.
Hopefully the players feel the same way.

i agree. 6 point dogs to Pitt, when they've just lost half of their staff, is a very winnable game against Big East (future ACC) AQ school.
Pony up, kick the [deleted] out of Pitt!!

I think fans think this way. It is the coaching staff that wants to go home to the islands.

I hope you are right, but I've been told about various fb posts by players that seem to indicate they wanted Hawaii or Fla over Birmingham. I want them to understand that the season is not over yet. And that beating Pitt will be better for the program than another vaca on the islands against Utah St or whoever.

I fully expect another half [deleted] performance because the players and coaches are disappointed about their destination just like last year. I wish they would stop acting like this is entitled to them and start acting like it is a privilege, because there are plenty of teams that would trade places with us. The attitude starts with June and is having a trickle down effect. I wish he would realize this and correct it.

I think us playing a BE/future ACC team is a big deal. Good chance for us to make a statement. If I drive all the way to [deleted] Birmingham the players better show up as well

Most of the fans I've interacted with were begging to play the galldang Ohio State Buckeyes in the TCB, I mean Ohio freakin' State even if they were "bad" this year, they were only bad for them They could have housed us if they made the plays when they had the chances too. Now would be a good time to play Pitt and it could be a huge program win because there is going to be a stigma attached to Penn State, and whatever happened, who in the hell can really follow JoePa from OUTSIDE the cult? Pitt is about to return to being one of the beasts of the East unless Ohio State and Michigan can steal ALL the top Pennsylvania kids, doubt it. Beat them now and in a few years that will be street cred. I'm sure of it.

Based on what we saw in the 2nd half of the season, I don't think it will have much of an impact. I'm serious.

I think the new staff should coach us in the bowl game.
