Stoops will consider Nebraska coordinator job
OMAHA, Neb. -- Former Arizona coach Mike Stoops says he would consider the Nebraska defensive coordinator's job if it is offered to him.
Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini has to fill the opening left when his brother, Carl, left to become head coach at Florida Atlantic.
"I want to be a coordinator or a head coach, either one, depending on what's the best fit for me," Stoops said Tuesday.
The Pelini and Stoops families are close friends from their days growing up in Youngstown, Ohio.
He declined to comment on whether Bo Pelini had discussed a job with him but added, "I talk to Bo a lot."
The 49-year-old Stoops said 21st-ranked Nebraska, which would have three straight 10-win seasons if it beats South Carolina in the Capital One Bowl, would be the type of place he's looking to work.
"They're awfully good, and Bo has a great defensive mind," he said. "Those are important elements to me, as well as having an opportunity to win at a high level."
Stoops said he watched Nebraska three or four times on television this season and was impressed.
"Bo has a certain style he likes to play, and it's very effective," Stoops said. "We saw them in a bowl game and they got after us pretty good."
Stoops was referring to the 33-0 loss to the Huskers in the 2009 Holiday Bowl. Arizona got off to a 7-1 start in 2010 and then things unraveled. The Wildcats lost 10 straight games against FBS opponents over two seasons before Stoops was fired.
Stoops was defensive coordinator at Oklahoma under his brother, Bob, before he took the Arizona job in 2004. Mike Stoops said he wouldn't have a problem with being an assistant coach again after having spent eight seasons as a head coach.
"No," he said. "I love coaching defense. That's really my passion."
Mike Stoops last week told the Daily Oklahoman newspaper that he had spoken to new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer but did not disclose whether he was offered a job on Meyer's staff.

This has been the rumor amongst the former players. Haven't heard much since last week. (That was before Urban talked to him though, and they didn't officially announce Carl was going to FAU until Mon either.)
He apparently has had several head coaching offers too, but obviously not ones that he has been willing to take yet.

We should take a good look at him and let him know we might be interested. Hope SO is getting very proactive with our situation.

I can't imagine he wouldn't be on the list. And there is a reason he hasn't told Bo or Urban yes yet. (Not saying it is SMU, but he is obviously waiting to see what head coaching offers he gets.)
Don't know if he is the best we can do, but he is a known name, and supposedly a good recruiter. Would like to see the recruiting job he could do in Dallas vs Tucson. We would have the best defense in the Big East for sure, and that goes a long way. You would think he could find a different OC.
He would definitely be the opposite of our current coach. Personally I prefer the fiery guy. June did a great job getting us to where we are, but I don't think the laid back islander thing is how you get to the next level.

Maybe a certain member of the current staff who is also a heckuva recruiter, has a couple rings and is likely looking to advance his career? Just a thought.

I have always liked RGT. Every interaction I have ever had with him has been positive. He had to manage a difficult situation to bring athletics back, but make no mistake, he is a fan. I actually think he does a masterful job of not giving into the faculty while making them think they got what they wanted.

I liked RGT as much as Mitch likes JJ until 6 months ago. Turner is all good in my books now. He wants to leave his legacy at SMU and realized sports needed to be included in that equation

Well, guess I was spoiled. Willis Tate was my president and in my heart of hearts always will be.
I have never really warmed up to RGT but will say that he is light years ahead of what we had in Pye.
