I think when you are in a price range like $4 million, the coaches that are "on the market" and worth the money aren't publically on the market. Much like how Jones was not considered "on the market". For that money, someone is out there.
i guess i am not talking about "somebody thats on the market" maybe think "out of the box" a bit do something crazy
i am talking about someone that normally would not ever consider coming to SMU....but you offer so much money they just cant hardly refuse.
where people would just be shocked... like "I cant believe SMU got that guy".
we were known for paying players to achieve greatness on the field how 'bout now paying an un-Godly NCAA shattering amount to a coach that would never have come to SMU under normal circumstances.
No I dont know exactly who that is.... maybe someone like a Bill Cowher, like a Gruden, like a Jimmy Johnson, like a Tony Dungy and these guys are just examples.....of course these guys have said no to others...but is there a price where they almost could not refuse?
If needed we need to set off a bomb and change the landscape of college football and just pay insane money to our next coach.
there mght even be a guy that is at a successful program that is making 2 million that would move if we offered to double his salary. wouldnt 2 million to 4 million be tempting? Money talks!
If we cant get a legend or a super elite type... What about even like a Todd Graham at Pitt? The guy has been known to leave a place after a year. Why not offer him double what Pitt is paying him? I would imagine he and his family would move home to Texas for twice as much as Pitt is paying him....
I just think we need to get a little crazy....go for the home run and not settle for some unproven asst coach from somewhere.

haha yeah no kidding
But in all seriousness, next time this comes around the university, if possible not sure legality, but find an up and coming coach with good indicators, great charisma to recruit, and offer him a 10 year contract that has heavy penalties to break the contract and only the school can break it without penalities and offer him a decent salary. That way for him, he has a high paying job, for the most part job security, mentality that the school wants you to be in it for the long haul and he has no choice.
You would overpay someone with that structure. The coach would be stupid to take his market value over such a long contract. He will demand a risk premium since you have effectively moved all the risk onto him (no penalties for school breaking contract)
Thats the thing you wouldnt have to pay him much a premium. Since he is young and has plenty of time ahead, its not a bad gig for him. Obviously you could put in a bonus system: take us to 9-3 or above to qualify... etc. Obviously unrealistic, but we need to do something to provide stability once we are successful on a consistent basis.
