JEEZSeriously tho... this is the great news? Are you kidding? Didn't Bennett already have 2 more years on his contract?
I was actually hoping for ONE state top 100 recruit to commit... Stampede's thread made me think that we might even get a (*gasp*) NATIONALLY ranked recruit. I don't understand why we would make this commitment now. We are in the middle of a subpar recruiting year and coming off of a 3-win season. In the grand scheme of things the extra years are not a huge expense for the school, but IMHO this is FAR from the earthbreaking news I was expecting from the previous thread that I checked 10 times a day since Sunday.
This 'news' even made the New York Times.
DALLAS, Dec. 8 (AP) - Even though the school has a poor record under his coaching, Southern Methodist University gave Phil Bennett a two-year contract extension Wednesday that will keep him at the university through the 2008 season. Bennett, whose team failed to win a game in 2003, is 6-29 in three seasons at S.M.U., including 3-8 this season. He had two years remaining on his current deal. "I am convinced that Phil Bennett is the man who will lead us to the Conference USA titles and bowl games in the years to come," the S.M.U. athletic director, Jim Copeland, said. The Mustangs are moving from the Western Athletic Conference to Conference USA for the 2005 season. S.M.U. had a 15-game losing streak, the second-longest in the nation, before beating San Jose State in its conference opener. The Mustangs won two of their last three games. "I have said from the beginning that we will win championships at S.M.U. and that I'm in this for the long haul," Bennett said. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/09/sport ... coach.html
Oh Please, this is a dumb move. if any of us performed at our jobs with a 6-29 in three seasons record we would be out the door.
recruits? maybe some don't want to come to SMU with a coach that can't win. I don't want to fire him and we should live up to the 5 year contract but an extention at this point in time makes no sense.
Despite the poor results, Bennett is showing that he has faith in this program. If there were no light at the end of the tunnel, he would bolt and go back to D-coordinator. Less pressure and good money at a big school. He is a proven commodity in that position. Instead, he is signaling that he has faith that this program can improve to the point of winning and he wants to be there for that.
Face it, with the last 3 seasons, many coaches would want out. It is a hard job to take a program so weak and turn it around. Many coaches would hit the road and leave behind the mess that SMU has allowed its athletic programs to become.
WE GOT OUR MAN UNTIL 08

Rossley should have got a 20 year contract extnesion when he went 5-6 in 1996
Suprised they didn't give Copeland a 10 year extnesion for all the great work he has done around here ![]() you guys are putting way too much emphasis on a recruit wanting to know the head coach is going to be there; recruits care much more about the guys he is going to play with and the campus life
actually the Norm Chows, and Texas Coordinators and perhaps others may make close to that if you include all reimburements. I forgot the exact numbers but UT pays gives their assistants a multimillion dollar annuity if they remain on the staff for over 5 years I'm sure top coordinators are making in the $300,000 range if not more

This is a good move. You have to understand how BARE the cupboard was when Bennett got here, especially last year after the recruits from Cavan's last good recruiting year had graduated. The Malin thing absolutely decimated our recruiting for Cavan's last years. Bennett's brought it back to a high, pre-Malin level but his kids are just now starting to mature. Giving him more time and less pressure is a good move.
Re:
Ponyboy, I agree with you every word. In addition, who else will you find that comes to work everyday with his enthusiam. The fans can sense it and so can his recruits. If we don't hold onto the one positive aspect of our football program, where will we be in 5 years. The same place we are every couple of years, a broken program with a new coach, a new system, and starting all over from square one. As a fan, I can't take this reshuffling anymore. We have found a guy who can recruit to a school with many vices. He has a pedigree of quality recruiting and defense. Oh and by the way, he wants to be here (don't give me this crap that no one else wants him). Who else wants to be here? I'm not saying give him a contract because he is the only guy that will come, but really guys who else can we bring in that will do anything different. I know we have all heard this before but, this team is young and inexperienced. Give this team and coaching staff more time that will in turn build more confidence. It seems that this contract extension does both.
It is ObviousWe had to do something to protect our investment, it was just a matter of time before Notre Dame would come knocking.
Full Steam Ahead!
Do you need anymore ice? Let me help you arrange those deck chairs.
Re: It is Obvious
Yeah and I have it from a reliable source that both the Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks have made inquiries about Bennett for their head coaching positions. ![]()
Re: It is Obvious
Did I ever say head coach? Do you really think that Bennett would sit around with no interest from other schools as a defensive coordinator? Think before you type...Coaches do not loose their ability to coordinate because they took a hiatus as a head coach...Look all over the NFL and the NCAA's for that proof.
