SMU: the non-NDI guess that SMU gains respect by not firing a losing coach and extending his contract, unlike Notre Dame. I would rather have respect on the field. I hope playing in C-USA helps our recruiting. Giving Bennett more time makes statement about giving him a chance in the new aleignment. Maybe the choice was fire him now, or give him job security.

Note that ND is down to about their 7th or 8th choice for coach. Great coaches don't want to go there because they sense that they won't get a fair chance to succeed. Imagine what dregs we'd be scaping at if we had fired Bennett. The ND job is probably one of the most prestigious in the Country and no name coaches want it. I think the extension is a smart move, we don't know the details of it because it does give recruits some reassurance that we are committed to this coach. Any recruit who read this site would think that Bennett will be out the door next year no matter what happens.
Re: SMU: the non-ND
A ND Alum corrected me and said that Willingham was not fired, his contract was bought out. They honored his contract (where as Davie did not have a buy-out clause). whatever.
Re:
The only one who seems to have goat pictures is Krispy Kopeland of Pres. Turner. I want a job where your decisions have led to failure and are never questioned. (see DISD chief,DART Exec, )
I was so much on the Charlie Waters bandwagon that I personally took a written plea to Gerald Ford (I got to know him from the years I was in banking). Gerald told me that he would be considered, but my understanding is that the Copeland dominated committee never seriously considered him.
I have also posted on this site before that I had the pleasure of sitting at the same table with Charlie at a charity event. During our brief discussion he told me that now getting the SMU job was the biggest disappointment of his professional life. I knew he wanted the job, but I was shocked how much. I still wish he had been the choice.
I really don't see Lamar Hunt being dominated by anyone especially Jim Copeland. Give me a break. Do you think we're idiots?
Charlie Waters has less coaching experience than Bennett. He played cheap shot artist defensive back for the Cowboys a century ago and had a crucial fumble in an NFC title game against the Redskins which would have put the Cowboys in scoring position down by a touchdown. I know this because I was at that game. He has few ties to the DISD. Few ties to HS coaches around Texas. But he's going to turn the program around with what - his good looks and personality? Give me a break.
Re:
Spoken like a true bitter 'skins fan. Give me the '70s Cowboys over the '70s Redskins every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And Waters brought the Ducks from a PAC 10 afterthought to one of the top defenses in the nation in what, three years? What has Bennett done with the little ponies in three years?
Shave your headsThose of you wish to protest the actions of the SMU athletic department can shave your heads in protest like the female administrator at ND has done who opposed the actions of her school regarding their football coach. Even the lame duck ND president has disavowed the firing too. Joe Montana said that changing two plays this season would have given ND an 8-3 record and saved the coache's job. And you think we have problems.
