Burger wars, re-visitedModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Burger wars, re-visitedGiven the number of Longview-ites on this board, I'm surprised we haven't had any mention of the Butcher Shop, a good place for a good burger in L-town the next time you're on your way to Ruston from Dallas.
Re: Burger wars, re-visitedI assume that's no relation to the Butcher Shop steakhouse in the West End, right? I love that place.

Re: Burger wars, re-visitedAnybody know anything about "Hamburger Mary's" over on Lemmon Ave.?
Re: Burger wars, re-visitedI think that place is a little...alternative. I've heard some advertisements for it on the techno radio station. That and bingo night...

Re: Burger wars, re-visitedA friend of mine when there once... And waited over an hour for his burger. Inexplicably, he went again... And waited over an hour before they told him that they lost his order... So if by "alternative" you mean masochist, then I'd say you were correct.
For the life of me, I can't figure out why anyone would go there when Burger Wars winner Snookies is less than 200 yards away. Anyone been to backyard burger in Addison yet? I hear they could be a contender. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: Burger wars, re-visitedGet the Burger Boys out to Backyard and give us a review! (Maybe we can rank them against Florida's finest???)
Re: Burger wars, re-visitedBurger Update:
After the recruiting event on Wednesday, the Burger Warriors descended upon Gazebo Burger (by popular demand) to reconnoiter the joint. Gazebo featured 1/3 and 1/2 lb. burgers with a fresh "fixins" bar ala Fuddrucker's and Joe Willy's. The burgers were tasty, the fries very good and he fried mushrooms above average. However, this class of burger IMHO does not in any way rank among our top contenders, nor would it have made the Burg Off finals. Gazebo, although good, is the generic "flat" beef patty cooked to a standard medium well. The higher ranked burgers, and all that made the Burg Off, are hand seasoned freshly ground beef. Also, the fixins bar had roughly the same variety as Joe Willy's, which falls far below the one at Fuddrucker's. Overall, Gazebo is a good neighborhood burger joint. If I lived in the Preston/Forest area, I'd probably go to Gazebo like I currently patronize Burger House (because I live close to campus). But if you're going to make a special night on the town for a burger, I'd recommend sticking with our Burg Off finalists. 1. Snookie’s 2. Uptown Bar & Grill 3. Fudrucker's 4. Joe Willy's 5. Snuffers 6. First & 10 7. Adair’s Saloon 8. Cheesecake Factory 9. Earl's 10. Campisi's 11. Gazebo Burger 12. Jake's 13. Two Rows 14. Chips 15. Rose’s 16. Tipperary Inn (closed by an act of divine burger justice) "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: Burger wars, re-visitedThat's too low for Gazebo's! Should be around 6 or 7 on that list. They make a darn good burger.

Re: Burger wars, re-visitedI am getting a little out of area here, but I was curious if any Austin Mustangs were familiar with The Old Waterloo Icehouse in Austin. Greatest burger in the world in the 70's when in an old hole on Capitol Avenue. They moved to a larger location and the quality went down a little. Wondering if they still existed, and if there was a Waterloo Icehouse in Dallas. I miss them so. I can not find a good burger in Little Rock area.
If perchance this has been discussed previously in this thread forgive me but I did not have 3 months to catch up. ![]() All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Welcome back, one and all. The Burger Crew hasn't convened in WAY too long, but I figured an update was in order.
First of all, I heard somewhere that Rose (of Rose's) passed away a few months ago. I don't know if the place is still open without her, but she made a terrific burger. Secondly, on a much more positive note, I also heard that Tipperary Inn has re-opened! For some reason, Peruna Punch doesn't seem to recognize what a great place that is. Perhaps his burger was overwhelmed by the Guiness and the live Irish music. Either way, I move that an honorary re-opening be held there. Soon. Thirdly, I sampled another burger this evening. Without a quorum of voters present, the review, of course, can not be considered official. However, let me assure you that there is no need to add Greenville Bar and Grill to the list of future burger testing zones (where's the Backyard Burger that a few folks have mentioned here?) I've been accused of heresy for this, but I generally order my burners medium or medium-well, basically because if my burger moos at me before I bite it, I tend to lose my appetite. (Some of the carnivores in the group seem to think that if the thing has stopped grazing, it's cooked enough.) Anyway, tonight, on the chance that it might be a bit overcooked, I ordered a burger medium. Apparently "medium" is a euphamism for "hockey puck." I think the burger actually had decent flavor, but the rock-hard exterior of the burger and the ansence of any warmth at all in the bun made for a less-than-stellar burger. Thank goodness that our rankings are based on the burgers only - including the breadcrumbs-only "onion rings" would have put GBG at the very bottom of the list (I like my greasy food to have grease in it - these rings were like sawdust - OK on the flavor, but not nearly enough grease to seal off any arteries, and if a cardiologist doesn't need to be on-call, then a burger outing just wasn't successful). Since it was based on the burger only, the GBG burger would be tied with Cheesecake Factory for the second-worst on our list. (Again, a low-ranking burger is still a burger, so it's not like it's inedible or anything.) So call it 14A or something on the official and binding Burger Standings, which (minus the Florida entries) currently stand as follows: 1. Uptown Bar & Grill 2. First & 10 3. Rose's 4. Snookie's 5. Fuddrucker's 6. Earl's 7. Jake's 8. Joe Willy's 9. Chips 10. Tipperary Inn 11. Adairs 12. Two Rows 13. Campisi's 14. Cheesecake Factory 15. Snuffers
Whatasteve should have the Tipperary Inn much higher than that (I had many a buger-and-Guinness evening there.) Glad to hear it's open again - why did it close down? Might need to make a pilgrimage.

In regard to the rankings, "Fuddruckers" at what location? And which Fuddruckers has the old 'stang photos?

Based upon the replies to my post for some suggestions for places to visit up around 635 and Webb Chapel Road, I tried out "The Hole in The Wall" on Harry Hines (just south of Forest Lane) and found it to be a VERY interesting place. I'm going to have to try it out some night to check out the Blues music, if indeed they still do that. The burger was good enough and i enjoyed it, but it wasn't a top ten entry. The french fries, on the other hand, blew my socks off. Whatasteve would love them as they put 1st and tens' fries to shame. Talk about grease running down your arm. Man these babies were GREAT. I don't know what they do with the insides of the potato, but every strip in my order had some skin on it. Whatasteve, call me and we'll go there for lunch...just order the fries and you will be in heaven!!!!
