Fork Union Military Academy is in Charlottesville, VA. Two of its most famous alumni are current Dallas Cowboys QB Vinny Testaverde and Dallas Cowboys RB Eddie George. And, of course, both are former Heisman Trophy recipients. (Vinny in 1986, Eddie in 1995) Fork Union is one of only two secondary/prep schools in the nation to have two Heisman Trophy winners among its alumni.

(FYI: The other school is right here in Dallas...Woodrow Wilson High School...Heisman Trophy winners were Davey O'Brien - 1938 - and Tim Brown - 1987.)

FUMA is the only school to have dual winners in the past 60 years.

Running back Tyrone Wilson was one of the catalysts in FUMA’s run to the VISFA Division 3 State Championship game. Wilson scored three touchdowns and amassed 173 yards on the ground in the title game. Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, has taken note of Wilson’s ability and has offered the senior a scholarship to continue his education as a Mustang. In January, Wilson will make take an official visit to SMU.

Wilson may be joined by another FUMA cadet at SMU. Fullback/linebacker Curtiss Powell has also caught the Mustangs’ attention and has been offered a scholarship. Powell will also take his recruiting trip in January.

according to VirginiaPreps.com-a Rivals affiliate-Wilson is 5-6, 180. He is from DC. WAS All-Prep and VISFA Division 3 All State at RB. 1206 yards on 125 carries and 17 TDs. Rushed for 258 yards and 4TDs in State Championship game. Has great balance-speed to the outside and the power to run inside. Great Vision and ability to follow blockers. Powell listed at 6-1, 210 also made First Team All State.

I guess at 5'6" the vision makes you follow your blockers since you can't see past them. Must be some hellacious blockers to plow out ten yards per carry.

OK, we all know some smaller backs can be successful in college. But 5'6"? I guess if he's really carrying 180 pounds on that little frame, he might have the beef to survive. And of course, you can't mangle what you can't catch.

Any idea how fast either of these kids is?

I wouldn't look at his Fork Union stats as very meaningful. They pretty much plow over everyone they play, and they have post-grads playing against HS private school teams. I would pay attention to his public school stats. Those are the meaningful ones. As far as his size is concerned, ShanDerrick Charles didn't look much more than 5'6" and he ran all over the place until he broke his back. Small backs have the ability to hide behind linemen which gives them some advantage over bigger backs.

I've got a little tibit on the Curtiss Powell kid-although he was All Prep as a LB, he ran for 220 yards in a game story I saw on the internet. Pretty impressive for a LB prospect.

I thought that Bennett only recruited within a 300 mile radius of Dallas? By the way, when is he going to get some commits from DISD schools. I can't believe ALL these kids want to leave town!

ALL these kids see programs like the Teasips, the Aggie$, the $ooners, etc. and want to leave town and play with the BIG BOYS. SMU is no longer the school that it was during the heyday of Doak Walker and Kyle Rote. We're still getting commits from Texas kids, though. And that speaks volumes about Bennett's recruiting abilities.

Interesting note, Stallion. Any idea who it was against (small private school/big public school)?
Do you think he's being recruited at RB or LB? Or maybe as a SS or something?

there's a story on Rivals right now about another prominent Prep school Hargrave Military Academy, Get this they already have 16 players committed to BCS SCHOOLS. Their coach thinks they may have 40 kids who are Division 1A prospects. Apparently, almost every school in the nation sent a recruiter to a recent combine at their school.

you know I know that these Prep Schools have always produced a lot of good recruits but I'm sensing there bigger more fundamental change involved. I remember there has been some talk about how recent eligibility changes that I thought were to be implemented this year or next would make it much more difficult for JUCOs to gain eligibility in Division 1A. This also included the end of the "partial qualifier" designation so that all recruits would either be non-qualifiers or qualifiers based on GPA in NCAA mandated core courses and the deemphasis of SAT/ACT scores. The thought was to steer these kids away from the JUCO route and get them on Division 1A campuses earlier away from the Troy Sts, Fresnos and other non-qualifier havens. (actually I think the BCS schools were just tired of getting beat by these non-qualifiers at smaller schools since many BCS schools are in conferences restricting such players). The confusion for me is that the recruiting services seems to still emphasize the SAT/ACTs scores when referring to eligibility. Is SMU's recruitment of guys like Mouton, Lowery, and the kid on the BB team along with the first visiting recruits from Fork Union a reflection of this more fundamental change in Division 1A? Are coaches now steering kids to prep schools like Hargrave and Fork Union and community colleges for new eligibility reasons. Anybody have a good handle on this? If it is a fundamental change at least SMU seems to be willing to play the game. I mean c'mon 16 BCS recruits at one school-40 Division 1A prospects at one school-sounds like a new warehouse technique to me.
