2ndandlong wrote:You can't give tickets to High School students easily. I learned this when working on Sellout Stampede. The big problem is you are effectively "giving" something to recruit eligible students. Each of these "gifts" would require extensive paperwork be filed with the NCAA. You're talking about 10's of 1,000's of pieces of paperwork just to give away tickets. It's not effective.

You may recall the UTEP game where we actually met our sellout stampede goals, there were an abundance of middle school and younger kids running around in the section behind the UTEP fans. It is a lot easier to place tickets with this group.

Another problem, unless we're giving away donated tickets like we do with sellout stampede, none of those tickets count towards official attendance. You must charge $10 for a ticket in order for it to count towards official attendance. With that said, I agree the main attendance problem is butts in seats; however, NCAA attendance statistics are similarly important for several reasons.

Please give to operation sellout in 2012. We need to continue grass roots efforts like this campaign for several more years. Even once the marketing spend returns, I anticipate an effective marketing campaign for a product like this takes several months if not a couple years to be fully implemented.

I would think the paperwork problem could be worked out with computer technology as for the other points you mentioned I have no answer. It is good to know you are working at the problem and I hope you figure out a solution...

He seems very receptive to engaging alumni and the rest of the SMU community for help. However, it wouldn't be helpful to tell him we need a private marketing firm and have no real information or ideas.

I was just answering your question. Didn't know it required a convincing case study.

I've still only heard Northwestern and Miami.

Seems to me if there are only two other private schools with our same set of circumstances who use outside marketing firms and still don't fill the stadiums for football we might have a more complicated issue than just hiring an outside marketing firm.

Maybe this is a small 1a private school in a big city problem and not an SMU problem.

Perfect example of what we should be aiming for is Wake Forest.

Total undergraduate enrollment: 4569 / Total University enrollment: 7079 Avg attendance for 2010 season was 30k

Top 5 Private Schools in Attendance for 2010 season

School Percent Capacity Avg Attendance
1.Notre Dame 100.00% 80,795/game
2.Wake Forest 96.74% 30,474/game
3.Brigham Young 95.84% 61,381/game
4.Texas Christian 95.74% 42,466/game
5.Boston College 86.22% 38,369/game

Screamin' Demons----Student attendance of Wake Forest Football and Basketball games is high, in part due to the program known as "Screamin' Demons." At the beginning of each respective athletic season students on the Reynolda Campus can sign up for the program whereby they pay $15 for each season; in addition to the best seats at the games, this gets students a football shirt in the fall and a tie-dye t-shirt in the spring along with a card that serves as an automatic pass to the sporting events. They lose this privilege if they miss two of the games.

You cannot compare us to traditional college football powerhouses like USC. I lived in Palo Alto for years and you cannot compare us to Stanford either...it just doesn't work. They have traditional rivalries with most of the pac 12 that span generations. Vandy is SEC football, and they draw based on that and their opponent.

Of the schools you listed Nick, i'd say TCU most mirrors us. And I think we are pretty much following their model already, albeit 8-10 years behind.

Look at Wake again. ACC is comparable to new Big East, minus the traditional rivalries. They draw 31k a game, and they haven't been good in years. They have a small student population as well. I'd like to see how they market to Winston-Salem.
