What about current players
How do they feel about the whole June fiasco? Do they listen to him after this? Has he even addressed the team since ASU pulled the offer?

Re: What about current players
I posed the question to my son, who's a Jr. on his HS football team, as to how he and his teammates would react if it became known that their coach (who preaches team, commitment, family, etc. like June) had applied to coach another team but was turned down. He's 17, only a couple of years younger than SMU's players, and has followed the Ponies this year because of my interest.
His reaction was very negative. Told me that he didn't believe that the team could trust their coach and that there wasnt' really anything that could be said to re-establish the trust, particularly when the coach had stressed the one-for-all-all-for-one ideal.
This wasn't a knee-jerk reaction, so it wasn't an emotional one. Taking this as a proxy (which admittedly could be a stretch) it would appear that JJ has a big fence to mend, and that he'll have to do it with action, not words.
What can he do to mend that fence?

I texted two guys on the team that I know. Didn't hear back. Maybe they're still pissed because I peed their couch though

From the Daily Campus:
Jones is expected to release a statement and until he does so his players and staff will respect him by not making statements or talking to the media. This is in effect to stop the spread of rumors and to create some order in the midst of chaos.

First of all, he doesn't need to issue a press release through the SID. If he hides behind that, it continues to demonstrate the kind of person he is.
I don't want to hear about this being the PR thing to do -- not acceptable.
He needs to get up on podium, take his medicine and then start making the rounds.
He desperately needs to win the PR war right now.

This truly is a bizarre week because I find myself agreeing with you WAY too often. But the question was about player reaction and the indication from this is we won't hear squat on that regard unless you know any of them personally.

Mitch do not agree with you very often, but you are dead on. A press conference should be called and June lays it all out. If he has the character his agent claims he does then this is what a person with true character should do and would do. This will not patch everything up but it is a start.

Re: What about current players
I get the anger. But we are acting like SMU is the last landing spot for a coach. It's a stepping stone and will be for a long time. You guys can harp about Peterson or Fatterson and how they were loyal and stuck around, but they are by far in the minority. Look what that loyalty did for Pat Hill. And speaking of loyalty. Didn't we have a whole bunch of fans clamoring for firing Jones for going 7-5 prior to this fiasco? Yep. Great loyalty shown by fans. A coach takes a team to 3 bowl games after being a laughing stock for 25 years and that's the thanks he gets. Those same fans are the ones [deleted] that Jones would want to leave. Amazing. In today's football world everyone here should realize that their is no loyalty. Saban would leave for the right amount of money, oh yeah he's done that a couple of times. And we would still all take him in a heart beat. A&M jumps conference to the SEC. Hell, we just gave up on our loyalty to CUSA. Boo Hoo. Get over your hurt feelings. My hunch. If June were to sit down with his players and explain everything to them and why he did what he did, they would probably understand. People around here would just call him a liar no matter what he tells anyone. He's in a no win situation with you guys. Again, get over the hurt feelings.
Who are you going to bring in to do a better job at this juncture. Oh yeah, Klemm. A proven excellent recruiter with little coaching experience, no coordinator experience and no head coaching experience. Sounds like you guys are the type to take all your money and place it on black 35.

Getting to a bowl game is like making a D on a test. Only 40% of teams get early vacations and don't go to a bowl game. If anything he should be touting 2 divisional championships and one conference final appearance. Even in C-USA that's amazing progress.
