Recruiting Implications

Post by SMU2007 »

So now that June is back, as I write this at 11:30 anyway, what happens next?

1) He does not coach here next year (he's fired/leaves): the majority of the recruits for 2012 follow him. We try to salvage what we can and move on.

2) He coaches here for 1 more year per his contract: we are able to sign this 2012 class hopefully, but what happens for the next year's recruiting class? Does June know for certain he'd be kicked to the curb at the end of the season? and if that's the case, why would June/his staff care if they got anyone to commit for the following year? Or are we going to see a "commitment" from both SMU and June to eachother, followed by a not-so-surprising firing to finish the season. I just don't see how this plays out.

3) He coaches here for multiple years to come: fat chance.

Personally, I think we need to lock down this recruiting class for 2012 by any means possible, be it keeping June around, promoting Klemm, anything at all. I feel like we are just on the cusp of turning the corner, coupled with an announcement of conference jump, and it seems like another incredibly solid recruiting class helps bolster us just that much more.

Thoughts? Certainly there have been situations where coaches were very very likely getting fired after that season. How has that affected that year's recruiting?

i was thinking the same thing in regards to recruiting. the only plus is that a number of the recruits just want to go where JJ is.

IF he coaches next season I doubt he intentionally tanks. And since AK and Surfer dude do all the recruiting anyway I don't think they slack off but trying to convince recruits that the staff isn't leaving will be difficult. Maybe I'm delusional but I fell that SMU in the BE and with the money the CoC has shown they are willing to spend that this would be seen as a desirable job for several "good" coaches.

I think that the only thing June could do immediately that would help his position at SMU would be to ask for a contract extension, and insist that there's either a monster buyout or some other provision that would make it very unattractive for other universities to pursue him. He would of course only do this if he truly wanted to stay at SMU for a long period. But if he did this then he could say "I made a mistake, but I'm here and plan on being here for a while." and be somewhat believable.

I should point out that I don't think that's likely to happen. I think what's more likely is first that Orsini at least investigates the possibility of inappropriate conduct on the part of Jones with regards to recruiting. He can't let the university be walked all over like that so some sort of investigation is a must. If something turns up that Jones acted in the wrong, then you've got to fire him and move on. If it turns out he didn't act inappropriately, I think that Orsini and C of C has to decide to extend him now or not. It won't be easy for Jones to walk into a recruits house and sell him on 4 years of Jones at SMU without the extension.

This is certainly a dirty situation and we (Orsini, and co.) have got to act with swift prudence if possible. Those bozos at ASU sure have created a mess for all parties involved.
Here's to those that wish us well and all the rest can go to hell!!!

Also to accompany this, make JJ sell SMU not himself. He can do a little bit of it, but he needs to make it so they commit to SMU and not JJ and Co. to enforce this maybe make JJ record his meetings with recruits(I dont know NCAA rules) so S.O. can know his intentions or foul play. Just some type of internal control, so the University isnt walked all over again.

I imagine the militant faculty will be skewering JJ soon, since he made the university lower its standards for his recruiting. If JJ wants to have some control, he needs to say a public apology and ask for forgiveness. Fortunately for him, this is a Methodist institution, so it should be a little easier for him to gain our forgiveness.

We might as well write off the big 2012 class year, because it will be extremely hard to get anywhere close to Top 50 again...
