One thing I've been thinking about is the general culture clash as an issue that he should have thought about before he came here (again, I don't think he's the brightest guy in the world - probably just saw dollar signs and an opportunity to resurrect a program and not much more - he admitted in an interview with Bob Davies that he didn't even know about the SMU history before coming here ... dude's just not that sharp) ...

Anyway, SMU (and Dallas) are very conservative places generally and June seems to be pretty liberal. I've experienced this personally as I'm liberal on social issues and SMU was tough for me in some respects as a student. However, I'm a HUGE supporter but I can see how it can kind of grind away at you generally.

When you buy a new house, for an example, you look to fix the things you did not like about your old house. June did not like the support the football program was getting at UH, bad facilities, no recruiting budget, poor compensation etc. but they had good crowds and he was treated like a celebrity, could have been Governor. He comes to SMU and realizes that he has solved the resources problem but he is an afterthought in Dallas and there is a lot of work to do with fan support. So now he is looking to go where there are fans. But ASU is at best ambivalent about him and would not pay much if any more, and could their facilities be much better than SMU? Can not quite figure that unless there are other factors.

At this morning's unofficial team meeting, Sheldon told the team he is staying. He admitted that he wanted the ASU job. He also told them he had a "spiritual revelation.". God wanted him to stay at SMU. Some players immediately called BS. Some discussed transferring, and others said Sheldon should leave. Sheldon forgot to say that God spoke to him through the voice of ASU's largest booster who pulled the offer off the table. I think most of the players learned something today.

This has to be sarcasm.

Some? "Some" players called BS? I had more faith in our players than that. Every single one of them should have balked at that.

Now... count me in with the "others." And if they said this to his face, then kudos to them. Took guts.

I think the players learned something today.

That their coach is a lying, hypocritical, slime ball who uses religion as a crutch when it is convenient for him. Which means he is like virtually every other coach in college football.

Jones seems to recruit highly religious types, and highly religious types are by nature less skeptical. A part of the team might have bought it if he spun it right.
