Why all the hate on June?
This is my first post on this board. I have been following SMU football ever since June became your head coach and prior to that when he was at Hawaii. I have found this board to be one of the more civil and thoughtful sites and have enjoyed lurking during June’s tenure. I also happen to be an alumnus of Arizona State.
ASU has an incredible stadium that is packed with students and fans during each home football game. There is also great support from the alumni. The football facilities are first class and the PAC 12 is one of the best conferences in the country. So, why wouldn’t June (or any other quality coach) jump at the opportunity at being the head coach at ASU and turning an underachieving program into a BCS contender?
As a graduate of ASU, and having suffered through countless years of mediocre head coaches, I was excited with the possibility of June becoming our head coach. Notwithstanding all the negative ASU board posters (who will only be satisfied with a facsimile of Meyer, Saban, or Miles), June would have installed the disciplined staff and program we need to be a top echelon team in the country.
This brings me to my last point. Why all the hate on June? I can understand being disappointed that he might leave SMU, but the reality is most of us would leave our current job for a better opportunity. June has brought SMU back in four short years. Your recruiting classes are getting better each year. You are in the Big East now and your recruiting will only improve.
All coaches are open to new challenges: Dennis Erickson left Idaho for ASU after he said Idaho would be his last stop; your friend Mack Brown left North Carolina for Texas; Miles left Oklahoma State for LSU; and June left Hawaii for SMU; and the list goes on. What happened does not disparage SMU or the football program at all. This episode will blow over if you let it. At the very least, June has brought SMU back to respectability.
Best of luck ponies!

There hasn't been a coach around here who won enough to earn interest from other schools. It's new for most of us.

Re: Why all the hate on June?
First off welcome and I thank June for everything he has done. It is my opinion, he could have handled the matter better.
1) We were announcing our move to a BCS conference and yet the same day he was announcing his intent to leave
2) We had our first major recruiting weekend in 25 years and he left to interview with ASU and then someone on his staff told a few of the recruits they will have a spot open for them at ASU
3) He continually dismisses our traditions

Because he began to get recruits to change commitments from SMU to ASU before he started working for ASU.

When he completes this challenge, then he can go. He hasn't even come close to completing it. He has quit half way through the season in both this season and last. This year, he just blamed it more on attendance.
You would be pretty mad as well if your current coach was still working for ASU but began recruiting right away for his future job that he hadn't even accepted yet.

All of this
Plus now he's pretending none of it happened and he believes he didn't torch any bridges with his actions. No contrition for what he did. Not even acknowledgment.

Not sure how much you have read over here but a lot of people are pissed off at him for more than just this ASU business. His R&S has only worked in 1 game since he's been here, he constantly whines about attendance, his staff has 1 legit recruiter, his in-game coaching decisions are largely appalling, he hasn't embraced the SMU culture, his QB development has been awful, etc. The ASU situation was just the straw that broke the camel's back. By the way, be happy that you didn't end up with him, he would have gotten eaten alive in the Pac-12.

His kid bashing our program on facebook didn't help matters much either.
Just a guess--the feelings about SMU he expressed reflect our coach's opinion about his employer.

Call me old fashioned...when somebody doesn't like or respect me...and then publicly proves he doesn't like or respect me...I usually kind of don't like or respect him back.

If he would wear a band beanie for an entire fourth quarter, I may get back on board with him.

If he is his advice to June the client needs to be to resign and go back to the Islands where people still love him
