Would you REALLY want to be starting a new coach search?

Post by HB Pony Dad »

I personally would not!

JJ has not finished the job he was hired to do and as in all disputes there are always two sides.

JJ is obviously frustrated and angry, and when someone wants to give you more money you will look.

The fiasco of the last few days is troubling, but lets not cut off our noses because we feel like a cuckold.

It is just simple business, so let's make the best of it and start by encouraging the players to win!

Lets finish this last year in C-USA as champions while starting a serious search for a new dynamic well respected name recognizable head coach with a highly regarded staff.

SMU has the money to do this but any new HC does not want to see a non-supportive, petulant fan base.

As an aside, I flew in for the UCF game, and I too was shocked and dismayed to see the utter lack of turnout and support for a meaningful replay of the C-USA championship.

JJ had every right to be angry and embarrassed as I, a total outsider. was also embarrassed by the turnout.

Everyone on the 'vard was certainly happy to take their picture holding the "Iron Skillet", but couldn't bother to get their fannies into the stadium.

Everyone needs to step back from the ledge and consider your part, SMU's part, and JJ's part because everyone played a part in the drama of the last few days.

I really have no dog in this fight, and HB Pony Daughter is graduating this year, so I can easily continue as a Trojans Fan without missing a collegiate favorite; however SMU is on the cusp of greatness and I for one don't want to see the legitimate anger we feel destroy the progress SMU has made as it strives towards regaining its greatness,

Consider this while venting your anger...

Would you take three bowl games and admittance to an AQ Conference as sufficient success for a coach's four year tenure?

Although disappointed over the developments of the past few days, I'm happy for where SMU is and where we are soon to be.

PONY UP!

He might have had every right to be angry and embarrassed, but as the head coach of this team it was his job to get over it and continue to coach the rest of the season. Not moan and groan and send his players to the newspaper to complain about it. He gave up on this season after seeing the turnout. Should be more embarrassed about that than anything that was seen in the stands.

HBPD- you have some good points but as you are a relative newcomer to SMU you may not share some of the same frustrations as us 'old farts'. I am sure that as a USC fan you have experienced ups and downs in a program. Fans can not be expected to come running and fill up the stands with one major win at the beginning of a season so JJ's frustrations are not totally justified.
BTW- I enjoyed meeting and speaking with you and Thad at the coaches luncheon. I hope you will continue to be a Mustang fan. Congrats on your daughter graduating. I am sure her SMU degree will open many doors for her as she is a very talented person.

GO PONIES!!!

Exactly, you dont go and act like a freaking baby. I mean you beat TCU great but not good enough. Had he finished the seasons 10-2, 9-3, and the next season was crap attendance then get mad. He decided to pout and quit and obviously makes sense why the season ended the way it did. We lost to team that we should of taken to school, Taylor Reed was probably pissed at JJ and some players because he knows that fan attendance will be bad at SMU for awhile. This is a private school with undergrad admissions of 6k. I would say more than half didnt come to watch football but to get an education. That being said, maybe after Hawaii or going to a championship game people are interested to an extent. We need big wins (not TCU though great) like A&M, and going 10-2 and winning the championship and going to a great bowl game and winning that. For JJ to get all into a frenzy and go back on his word, hes too old for that crap.

You bring up some good points, however, Jones should not be allowed to return to SMU after resigning and choosing to accept ASU's offer. The fact that they pulled the offer isn't our problem. Try resigning to your boss, go someplace else, having your offer rescinded, would you be allowed to come back? Doubtful.

There is a vague hint about some of them on the rivals board.

No we wouldn't like to start a new search no matter who called. New coaches means starting all over, which we do not need to do. The next month will be a great test of character - coaches, players and fans. I'm looking forward too seeing who shows up for the game and how we do.
