The forthcoming press conference
Based on the reactions to the canned release, we can agree that it has as much sincerity as a paper cut.
However, one would think that this is just the first in a series of attempts to create a little acknowledgement of the events. We shouldn't be surprised by the vagueness of it. Most of these are written in this manner.
Without question, SMU, Jones and Leigh Steinberg have to put together a press conference -- within the next week -- for Jones to address all of these issues.
The team returns to practice I believe next week so what is he going to do when he meets the media before or after practice?
If SMU Sports Information gets in front of this and limits the questions to ones ONLY related to the bowl game, Pitt, injuries, etc... WITHOUT Jones addressing all of this and getting this matter behind the program, then we have a problem.
The atmosphere is going stink and there's going to be more questioning, more hostility, more distrust and the focus will not be on the team. There must be an announcement about a scheduled press conference. It can be in a controlled environment. But no questions should be off limits.
I would really hope that while SMU's administration continues its due diligence over Jones' tenure here, that it has the fortitude to FORCE June to do this. IMO he doesn't have any choice.
If June/Steinberg refuse, then these problems will not subside. Without saying a word, June will continue to make the case for his departure and lose support by the day.

Totally agree. If that presser was his level of new commitment then 'Ponies we have a problem'.

Re: The forthcoming press conference
Never going to happen (PR 101). You acknowledge -- barely -- the events of the last week and announce that everything is water under the bridge, it's time to move on, and talk up the game.
Even if there were a press conference -- and there won't -- it wouldn't be Steinberg's event. It would be SMU's event. June Jones works for SMU, not Steinberg. If it were up to Steinberg, JJ would never face the media again. SMU will never orchestrate something like this, either. Simply won't happen.

Agree, probably won't happen, but he needs to make some statements to the team and hear them out. That is more important IMHO

The only presser we need is the one that introduces our new head coach.

Re: The forthcoming press conference
Obviously SMU must know that the alumni (especially big donors) are only going to carry about this debacle. Trying to throw it under the rug (like big corps do to shareholders) will only cause more drama, anger, less attendance and donations. They need a legit press conference in auditorium where at least 100-200 seats for all the people to hound him about his decision. To be honest, I think big contributors to low contributors should be the ranking which asks questions and placement of seating. I really wish I could be wherever it is and ask, why JJ, why do this now? Why if anything couldnt you tell ASU to keep quiet?
Re: The forthcoming press conference
There will be no further pressers on this subject.
I take bets until noon.

Totally agree. NO WAY, a presser ever happens on this topic. Would a Sheldon presser accomplish any good? We all know how Sheldon handles these types of situations, nothing of substance would come from it, and we would all be back on this site complaining about the same topics that are contained in about 80 threads on this board. Sheldon is egotistical, arrogant and all about himself. Not going to change anytime soon.
My hope is that the Mob Boss is handling this behind closed doors as it should be handled. This is a private matter where Sheldon needs to get his arse chewed out, and I think that’s what Steve O will do or has already done. No need to hang our dirty laundry to the public any longer.
It’s time to swallow this nasty pill, salvage the recruiting class and have the contingency plan ready to go for the future.
Re: The forthcoming press conference
Damage control is in overdrive. Everyone is saying the right thing, publicly. What happens in private is another thing. I have empathy for Orsini. He now has two coaches that he somehow has to rally support for among the big donors. If some in the Circle of Champions opt out there is a problem. This BB season and the bowl game and subsequent(2012) football season are critical. Bad results and two coaches are in peril. Doherty probably goes first. I can't see SMU firing two HCs in one year. The BE schedule is looming and it will be more difficult than CUSA.
My hope is that JJ can keep what is supposed to be a banner recruiting class intact. Probably JJ, without a dramatic improvement in 2012 and 2013 will be gone. He has made SMU football better but the progress is more apparent than real. Take away the win over TCU and the record does not look nearly as shiny.

Re: The forthcoming press conference
No, there will be no press conference.
He is going to sit down with Kate Pappadapoulous for 15 minutes after practice one day next week.
He is going to drop by for a segment with Norm Hitzges at some point, but no later than the Normathon on 12/25.
And that will pretty much be it.
