I think this is spin 101. Ooops. But in reality, we need to understand that no coach these days is married to a school. The days of Paterno, Schembechler, Bryant are gone. We now have the Sabans, Miles, Meyers and Jones of the world who go where the bread drops down the heaviest and opportunities seem brightest. We also have schools that fire coaches after two years (like KU) did to Gill. So, he started down a path to switching to ASU and thought it was a done deal, and things changed. In todays internet, tweet, im world, things move so fast that what would have taken days to sort out took minutes. Stop recruiting, wait, go back, no stop, no go back. This was a cluster.... of the highest order by a seasoned agent who should have known better and by a University who should have kept things close to the vest until it was final. I'm not sure how when you are a final candidate for a new job, you can face recruits honestly and say, if you come to SMU, you'll be playing for me. So, part of me understands calling the guys off the trail. At least SMU is looking like they are taking the generous track in all of this which will pay dividends when we search for the next coach at SMU.

Ummm....maybe his agent shouldn't have been on sports radio shows in arizona trying to sway public opinion for his hiring too. This isn't just ASU mishandling it. It is his agents, it is his assistant coaches. It was everyone.

He has every right to look for a job, but part of the gig is to keep that absolutely quiet until the ink is dry. We know he can do that, because he did it when he was leaving Hawaii. So the only thing I can surmise is that he doesn't respect SMU because he didn't show us the same respect he showed Hawaii when he was leaving there.

He didn't leak it though. Everything I saw was that others leaked it. That may be poor hiring on his part, but I don't see anything wrong with talking to his agent or his key lieutenants.
