If Mr. Pony wants to write a check for 6 million dollars to fire him then I am all for it. If not I am letting the CoC handle it because it is their money not Mr. Pony's money or mine. Come on Mr. Pony write the check.

Jones was actively looking for a new job, right?

Post by 2ndandlong »

All the haters, remember this:

This job sucks to those on the outside.
Most of our alumni and students suck because they don't go to games, give money or care. This is slightly improving.
The national attention on our program sucks. A major conference realignment announcement concerning us gets buried on page 3.
Our facilities are improving, but they suck right now considering coaches will spend most of their season outside in 100+ degree heat practicing.
Our marketing sucks because our budget situation sucks. This is improving too, but not enough yet.
Our academics gets in the way of athletics. This is improving, but we're not there yet.
Why would a better coach want to come here if we act like a bunch of [deleted] towards a guy that has dramatically improved things around here?

Notre Dame is in a hell hole of a town, but college coaches dream of going there because alumni, students, Catholics, and nearby residents worship that program.
They get more attention than we could ever dream of even though their team sucks.
Their facilities are good because people throw money at them.
They have marketing and a program that markets itself.
It is still a great academic institution.
Why wouldn't a coach desire this?

I understand all of this, love SMU, and those of you that know me, know that I am committed to SMU, the Cox School of Business, and the Mustang Club and all of the athletics it supports. I know that we are headed in the right direction and JUNE JONES HAS DONE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT TO HELP US WITH SOME OF THE ABOVE PROBLEMS AND I THANK HIM FOR IT. I can look past his shortfalls as he has looked past a whole lot more of ours.

This is the last point on going to make on Jones regarding this episode and then I'm moving on. This past weekend, he validated every argument that I raised against him for the last two years.

I find him to be one of most manipulative, insincere people I've ever met. He's messed with the fabric with the university by forcefeeding us with garbage in terms of horses, etc. He's not a front man for the school. In short, he's a bad guy.

His offense is also ridiculous because it's borderline obsolete by today's college football. I've concluded that we'll win enough to get to these types of bowl games but we won't be seriously competing for championships.

To me that's not what a football program is about.

I made my case on Thursday regarding the thread of SMU's newfound leverage. Jones knows he has a lot of behind-the-scenes work to do to regain credibility with the players and his coaching staff.

Frankly, there's a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that we don't need to know about.

So let the process play itself and trust that the powers that at be at SMU will make the best decisions that will be in the best interest of the university.

And then we'll go from there.

Strongly disagree that this job sucks to the outside world...

Pretty surprised you would say that...

Leverage. We don't have immediate leverage Mitch. We will in 2013 when the buyout is not in effect but we don't now. What are we going to do now? Demand he do something or we will fore him and give him 6 million dollars on the way out the door. Yea, that some real good leverage alright. Give me a break.

I must disagree, Mr. Leader (albeit the minority). June's offense is what makes him successful. It's not something that teams see every week, and when you only have a week to prepare for it it's much more effective. When you have longer (for example, A&M in the first game), it's no so effective.

Look at Washington State in 2009. It went 1-11 with the 1 W being against us. Washington State knew how to prepare for June's offense: it plays Hawaii every year.

Basically, June is betting on the fact that he can make up for a lack of skill with a gimicky offense.

Not a schill by any means. But we don't have all the money in the world now (unless you want to write a check for the 6 million dollar buyout). I say we do need to fire him. But we may have to wait until 2013 to do it. Read my post. I think he should go one minute after signing day but I don't have the money to do it. But as you said we just have to trust the powers that be.

probably more harsh than I really feel, but I just don't think it is a destination like others. If you were to rate us as a destination, where would you put us?

I'd say we're a B to a B+, right now. 5 years ago, we were a B- if not a C+. Coaches will come here, but we're not Michigan, ND, LSU, UT, etc.

Don't get me wrong. I think we're headed in the right direction.

Look no further than the job in ft worth. This could very well be and end job, I could go through a list of why it's a better job that a lot of top 25 gigs but I have already done that.

Once we enter big east, it's best job in that conference day 1

mr. pony wrote:When SMU gets to 12-0, the calls will come

they will come long before that...no matter who our coach is now or in the future.

somebody...June, Klemm, whoever....if they win 8,9,10 games in a season @ SMU
teams are gonna come-uh-calling....it's the nature of the business

hopefully next time we go through this...and we will...trust me
it will be handled much better...

but there are always some hard feelings when a coach
leaves a program doing well for a bigger better deal.

I agree we're better than some of the top 25 gigs. I would also say that there are several schools not in the top 25 that are much more attractive than SMU.
Ohio State
Notre Dame
TAMU
Is UT top 25 this week?
Tennesee
Florida
I could easily list another 20 schools that are more attractive.

Totally agree on the Big East point. And just so we're clear, I'm playing devils advocate on where our school ranks as a destination, but do you think we're top 25 in this (based on your top 25 gigs comment) or closer to number 50?

You Speak Truth and Wisdom Sir... When a prospect looks past the glitz appeal of SMU and considers the stumbling blocks there is considerable Risk to assess before accepting a job at SMU. More so since this twitter episode has intensified the scrutiny of coaching positions at both ASU and SMU. Consideration requires Money and plenty of it for a coach with options to take additional Risk especially when others with Big Bucks and Ego's of their own could destroy you because they have the Money and Ability to do so if you don't wear the proper attire or change your stripes. The fact is a Group of Fat Cats who are picking up the tab, and I would assume have control of the position not Ford, is another considerable layer of Risk. There are dozens on this site that want legal action and if they realized or cared about the effect it would actually have on the future of the program and searches for coaches one would hope they would see their folly and quit trying to cause more trouble.

Maybe it will be the best job in the BE. Still the guy in Ft. Worth is an anomaly. Successful BE coaches get poached just as much as CUSA coaches. All this butt hurt over JJ looking for another gig is ridiculous. How many of us just think Patterson is too scared to get out of his comfort zone at TCU and go to another program that might have higher demands and more pressure to see if he can succeed there? I'm guessing quite a few. In fact, that's the way it's going to look for a successful coach at SMU. The broad national opinion would be a coach too scared to play the big boys. That view has been placed on June for years now. Never wants to take a BCS job because he can't hack it there.

The fact is the BE is a better situation for SMU than any other conference. IT'S THE EASIEST BCS CONFERENCE TO WIN! Doesn't mean everyone on Ponyfans wouldn't want to jump to the SEC. Same with coaches. You could be extremely successful at SMU in the BE. Top 10 perennial team. Still, I'd bet 99% of the coaches out there would jump at an opportunity to coach at an SEC, B10, etc. school.
