DMN's high school boy's player of the week. 6'2", 185" shooting guard who is averaging 34 points through 16 games. A 3-year starter who has averaged 22.9 points as a junior and was named all-state. Williams is getting interest from SMU, Pepperdine, TCU, Baylor, and Texas Tech, but hasn't received any offers yet.
Folks, we need to sign this guy! Not only can he score, but his grand dad is Max Williams. Max starred at SMU way back when. He ALSO controls an oil company. In the early 80's, Director Hitch went to his office looking for a small donation and came away with a small donation of $1 million, that's $1 MILLION, folks. However, his name wrongly got mixed in with the scandal and he has, evidentally, disassociated himself ever since. Who knows, a scholarship for the grandkid (who appears to be able to shoot lights OUT!) might help the refurbishing of the arena at a minimum, or help with the purchase of a new one if Tubbs and Copeland play their cards right!
I say give the kid the scholarship that we still have available!

If he can be the shooter Brian Miller was supposed to be before his back went out, I'd say sign him in a second.

The article also says that Matt has scored less than 30 points only seven times and has made 69 three point shots. He sounds like a smaller version of Pistol Pete Maravich!

There is something a little strange going on -- if you go to TexasHoops.com they have posted, about half way down, an updated list of all known basketball letters of intent. Am I seeing things or does it say Matt Williams - SMU?

Yeah, it does say that (and says he's 6'1" instead of 6'2"). Wonder if he's "signed" only as a committed walk-on? If his family is as well-off as you describe, he certainly could handle the tuition, leaving a scholarship for an additional player.

I'm guessing that Tubbs is holding the last ship open for one of the "superstar" offers that are still out there or a solid JUCO or transfer.

There arent really any superstars left. Gary Flowers is uncommitted, but unlikely to be eligible. He's looking at junior colleges.
Williams has been offered a scholarship and he's committed to us. There will probably still be one more scholarship available, Brian Miller is unlikely to return.
Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.

Great! We can use his outside shot BADLY! Hopefully, his grandfather will again take an interest in the program and we can REALLY benefit from the commitment!

Ponymon, I believe Max already has an interest since he has been coming to the games and has season tickets in the blue seats.

I had heard that he was VERY upset by the treatment he received during the death penalty inquisition and would not have anything more to do with the program. Glad to hear that we may be back in his good graces!

Max Williams was not effected by the NCAA in the least. He is a proud grandfather who follows his grandson's b ball closely.
I can personally tell you Max was one of SMU's all time shooting guards. Matt, his grandson, has worked extremely hard at basketball and perfecting his shot. Matt's younger brother, Ryan, is also a gym rat and it will be intersting to watch his development as well.
Congratulations to Matt Williams for realizing his dream of a Div 1 scholarship in basketball.
