Big East Money/ Marketing...

Post by westexSMU »

We have all read that SO has said recently that SMU, with extra BCS money, will pursue a more aggressive Marketing stance in the future. The time is now to start organizing the Marketing Department as we can not succeed long term in a BCS conference and have an average of under 20,000 realistic fans at our home games. Properly set up, Marketing success can happen quicker than some people think.

Hope they give SMU fans the chance to buy tickets first. Hell, I will buy as many as I can and then re-sell at face value to SMU people

Is there a chance that Sumlin backs out of the A&M return trip knowing how tough SMU is and trying to get ready for SEC play. I assume they try for a full home slate of cupcakes before conference play. Assuming the game goes on as planned, is it going to be at Ford?

I would not spend a dime on billboards and TV commercials. That hasn't done a thing for us in the past. I'm talking about more individual marketing and targeting certain groups that really care about college football. Invite them to events and create spots on the Blvd. for Dallas Fans. What I'm talking about is a lot of needed personal work to change the perception of SMU Football.

Agree.

This will only work well if it is SMU people or prospects buying the tickets. If we have A&M or TCU people buying the package, all we have successfully done is sell tickets to games that they will not attend. The key to the multiple sale is to sell the package to SMU fans or prospects in order that they will return to see us play again. Just making an Aggie pay for tickets to Memphis and Southern Miss for instance does not put his butt in the seat for the Memphis game. Sure it helps from a money standpoint and that is a good thing, but I for now would rather get the butts in the seats. The short season ticket package after the TCU win was a great idea. I do not know if it was a success or not but the thought was good.

As far as the TCU and A&M games are concerned, just raise the price for the single game ticket and let it be known that will be the case when promoting season ticket sales to SMU supporters.

Just my opinion.

Many of those fans will give, or cheaply sell, those tickets to SMU alums or potentially come back if they are Dallas area residents. I am a big fan of the mini-season package with first game included in both packages (TCU or aTm). Is the Aggy game confirmed for Ford?

years ago when I lived in Dallas and had season tickets, I enjoyed 2nd row courtside seats in Moody behind the SMU bench. This was during the Dave Bliss era when we reached top 10 status and would pack Moody for most "big" games. I remember the seats next to me being occupied by different people frequently and learned (when Texas came into town) that a UT alum had bought 2 season tickets and was a member of the Mustang Club just so he would have good seats for the Texas game. Don't remember his name but at least he gave the tickets to someone who would use them...for most games, at least. Pretty rare, but it actually happens. I know Clemson/S.Carolina people who do this so they will have tickets for their rivalry game.

obviously this is no longer a problem at SMU, but maybe someday....

Long live the 1500
