Merchandise Licensing Question

Post by FIVE-O-FAN »

I have a question regarding merchandise licensing that I am confident someone on this board can answer.

How does the school derive income from the sale of officially licensed merchandise? Is it a per item fee, percentage of sale, or something else? Thanks.

I know this much, if they want to generate more revenue, enhance the brand, etc... They Need to think about indirect sales channels (like everyone else). I understand they keep very tight controls on the license (may change when BE move is complete)... But you can't even buy SMU gear in their home golf course pro shop.... You can get TCU,TT, OU, and Texas, but nothing SMU.

Hopefully all that changes for the better when they get their new marketing department :)

Myth. they don't keep tight controls on the license. there's no market for it. it's pure supply v. demand.

when you see SMU stuff, buy it.

You may be correct, but I've been told "tight controls" by golf shop, Dillard's, and Macy's when I asked why no SMU gear. Just say'in :)

You can debunk anyone who tells you that by getting them in touch with Brad Sutton in the AD's Office who can set them straight. I think they say that rather than having to say "nobody wants to buy it so we don't carry it". Wherever you see SMU gear show up, buy some to show the interest. Bed, Bath & Beyond at 15th & Alma had SMU tumblers for a while and I snatched up as many as I could. If people will buy it, stores will sell it and SMU is more than happy to help get them setup.

i don't know who you're asking, but the guy at the register has no clue. and even store managers at Dillards & Macys don't make purchasing decisions.

and as far as i know, none of those listed are manufacturers who would be the ones licensing.

The Kroger at Mockingbird has an SMU "Section".

Even the Walgreens on Mockingbird advertises SMU Merchandise on its electronic sign.

Thanks to Kroger, Walgreens and all the other stores who have the courage to publicly support SMU.

What about the courage to wear it? Or give it as a gift?

KB Homes once had a sales promotion and gave away a ton of KB shirts. Buddy from another builder got a bunch and gave them to homeless people. Do the same with UNT and TCU.
