Why is $100k a big deal? Did you just volunteer to join the morgan campaign and find out what it is actually like to call SMU alumni and ask for money?

they've been doing these type dinners for a while if i remember correctly.
never had such lofty goals though. i think they're trying to get $500 or more from everyone who attends. it's at the Mercury, and free whiskey & steaks.

That's right. The 1% don't get there by just giving away their money. Folks who think this is important will need to step up for this project. Unfortunately, the AD doesn't have 100k sitting around for a camp.

Thanks 2nd, and again I didn't mean to knock anyone. I'm still very much an outsider and I see SMU constantly brag about being a school of "money". Rumor had it that JJ was golfing with an ASU donor that wanted to stroke a check for as much as $50m, but now JJ finds himself begging for $100k at SMU -- for camps! It just seemed very weird and uncomfortable.

I didn't mean it like that and didn't take anything the wrong way. I was having fun. But if you (or anyone else) do want to participate in the morgan campaign, that would be awesome.
SMU's money mostly lies in the endowment which is untouchable for things like this, so when you hear about the billion dollars, it is all tied up like a restricted trust fund.
Parents often have money, but they don't cut checks like alumni do. Those parents that do are awesome and very much appreciated. Most feel like they are already shelling out a quarter of a million dollars and don't need to pay more.

Couldn't agree more. SMU alums make well into the six figure range and beyond, so what's a couple thousand a year to MC/booster events? Also, although I donate my share, Monday was my first luncheon and I noticed something quit disturbing. We do not have a lot of younger alums that are involed. AS I said, that was my first luncheon and I plan on attending a lot more going forward, but something needs to be done to bring in alumni in the 27-37 age range who are finally in a place career wise to make significant donations.
In the future, BE money will make having to beg less likely to occur.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
I raise capital for a living, among other things. I haven't gotten involved much with SMU fundraising outside of my personal funds, but would be happy to help if anyone wants to email me.

Guess that's what happens when any graduates from SMU that are in the 25-45 range never saw a winning team while they were on campus and never developed any interest in SMU football.
At least from my experience, those alumni are learning to support the team, especially this year when almost all the games were televised, and there was a good product on the field (for the 1st half of the season anyway). Hope the trend continues but it will take a little while.
