Will C-USA give us an annual, year-end \"rivalry\" game?

Postby UConn/SMU » Thu Dec 16, 2004 8:40 pm

The Big East has apparantly paired UConn & Rutgers as one of it's "rivalry" games for Thanksgiving weekend every year (UConn fans were hoping for Boston College or Syracuse, but "stuff" happens).

Is C-USA going to schedule us with a particular team for the last game every year? If so, I think Rice would be the best option (fairly similar private schools with a long history of playing each other). I like the idea of playing a rival at the end of the year.

Any thoughts?

CUSA Rival

Who we get as the 'rival' is based on UH v Rice. Generally they play early in the season, however as they get into the same conference, perhaps it moves to later in the season. We could pick up Tulsa, however I agree, it is always good to play Rice.

Existing rivalries include: Tulane and USM, Rice-UH. Other than that we are in a brave new world. We could get Tulsa or UTEP. But our non-conference game with TCU remains our rivalry game. They won't have a paired rival in the MWC given they are the ninth team.

USM's rival is Memphis...that should be a permanent cross-over game.

My understanding is that there are no permanent cross-over games. That being said, Memphis and USM will both be in the same division, so they will play every year regardless. Tulane-USM would be a cross-over.

Assuming Rice and Houston claim each other, who would you rather see a traditional Thanksgiving game against: Tulsa, UTEP, or Tulane?

I don't think that we should even attempt to schedule a game over the Thanksgiving weekend. We are a school made up of students with the means to get home over the long holiday, and the vast majority of them do. Not to mention the number of alums in the Dallas area that have family elsewhere that travel over that weekend.

In years past when we did play our rival from Funkytown that weekend, since their student body is a similar mix as ours, the game was one of the worst attended games of the year. I think that it would be even worse if we played anyone other than TCU because the FtWorth faithful few do drive over here to support the frogs, but I seriously doubt that anyone else will travel that weekend. Maybe you could get Tulsa folks to make their annual shopping pilgramage to Dallas and swing by for the game.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

If you have to debate who you should play in your rivalry game, is it really a rivalry? IMO, TCU is our only true rival....and maybe Rice to some degree.

great! a budding rivalry with a school of math nerds---even worse the math nerds kick our [deleted] every year. Quite frankly if we never played Rice again my life would pretty much go on just fine. Nobody ever seems to go to this game anyway so why do you people still want to have a rivalry with Rice. Personally I have hoped and prayed for about 30 years that we could get as far away from the hopelessly naive and losing Rice Owls as possible-much as TCU wanted to get away from us. You people think its good to play "schools with our academic mission"-I think we'll be dregged down with them. And what do you get if you beat your big rival-well nothin-because nobody gives a damn about the rice Owls and they never will. I would think that the SMU/Tulane game has potential-at least for road trip possibilities.

So Stallion, tell me what you REALLY think about Rice.

And you're right about Tulane.....New Orleans is greatness.

I wonder if Rice has hope and prayed the same about SMU, since we are no better (and recently worse) than they are.

We should play Rice (the school with the academic mission) in chess on Thanksgiving.

Rice may yet make Stallion's dream come true and take themselves out of DIA. Currently they have themselves on almost a year by year existance. Remember all that talk last year? I believe they only delayed making a decision about it.

that's right, my bad...I was still thinking of if TCU and UL/Cincy were still in the mix, and the earlier CUSA make-ups had Memphis and USM in diff divisions...
