I went to that 86 game in South Bend. We were totally humiliated and everything that could go wrong did. The saddest part of the whole thing is that I went up there a confirmed ND hater. Turns out, the campus is beautiful in the fall, the atmosphere was very similar to the Boulevard in a very easy going way, the ND fans were knowledgeable, friendly, and very sportsmanlike, and because our band didn't make the trip, the Irish Band played our fight song in our honor two or three times. Best losing experience I ever had at another school's campus.

Funny, I've heard from multiple people that have been that it's just an enormous parking lot filled with drunk, angry subway alumni that turn the place into their own personal land fill and leave it looking like a demilitarized zone. In other words, as far away as possible from the Boulevard.

I parked on a quiet residential street a few blocks from campus, had burgers and beer with some hospitable ND people who were grilling on the lawn outside their dorm, and didn't see a single drunk.
But that was before they enlarged the stadium and manners have become more coarse in the last 25 years so I can't argue with your friends.

Yeah, I haven't been myself, but that's the rumor I've heard.
