Rivals hoops is reporting that SMU has accepted a verbal commitment from Matt Williams, a 6'2, 185 pound senior prospect out of Trinity Christian Academy in Addison.

What he did: Williams scored 133 points during four games of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Tournament on Thursday through Saturday. TCA-Addison dropped the first game to Carrollton R.L. Turner, but won three straight to capture the consolation championship.

Matt Williams Who is he?: Williams, a 6-2, 185-pound senior shooting guard, is averaging 34 points through 16 games in TCA's up-tempo offense. A three-year starter, Williams averaged 22.9 points as a junior and was named all-state.

The stats: Williams scored 30 points in the loss to Carrollton R.L. Turner and scored 26, 44 and 33 points in victories over Jewish Community Center, Carrollton Ranchview and Terrell. Williams' season-highs include games of 61 and 53 points. He has scored less than 30 points only seven times. He has made 69 3-pointers.

He said it: "I don't like to be a ball hog. I do like to score pretty much every time I get the ball. That is pretty much my job on the team."

Coach said it: "He's just so good. If you let him shoot he's going to make shots. If you try to close in on him, he'll get around you." -TCA coach Marty Nichols.

Did you know?: Williams said he is getting interest from SMU, Pepperdine, TCU, Baylor and Texas Tech, but hasn't received any offers yet. ...Williams' grandfather, Max Williams, starred for SMU and Avoca High. Max Williams' career high at Avoca was 61 points, which he witnessed his grandson match against Plano West on Nov. 20. ...Williams' mother, Claire (Morris), also played at SMU. ....Williams also plays shortstop and pitches for the baseball team.[/url]

Max Williams was quite a player for SMU in the 1950s. He was like a little bowling ball but a great shooter and leader.

Matt was at the game last night with Max and I got to meet him. He is a very sharp young man and seemed real excited about coming to SMU. I think his grandfather was pretty excited also!

Welcome aboard, indeed. Gotta love the stats. Sounds like another scorer to go along with Hopkins and Roberts next year. With Dez running the point or alongside BHop in a 2 point offense, it appears coach Tubbs is building some depth at guard.

Actually, McNamara at Syracuse plays sort of a hybrid point/SG .... he runs the offense and shoots a lot of 3s, but I think they make adjustments to help him on the defensive end. And I have to believe this guy is quicker than McNamara.

This guy sounds like a bomober, and looking at the scoring numbers, I can't imagine he'll spend a lot of time running the point. Besides, I thought Willingham was the guy to be doing that. I hope to see him primarily at the off guard, maybe some limited time at point.
