Everyone wants to lynch him (not literally) because we see the even greater potential that remains unrealized, and although it is great to be partially back we need to step up some things to get the whole way there - and June disagrees and is stubborn about some of those items.

To have those aspirations and to have the resources and will to act on them despite our small size is what SMU is all about - and that is not a bad thing.

I agree with the three headed monster (old SWC guys, bottom of the barrel guys, and Jones era "almost there" guys) - as time progresses we will hopefully build on the later with a tip of the hat to the former, and forget the middle.

I would add that our academic standing has risen dramatically in the last 10 years, and that is not irrelevant to the football story. It is hard to improve your team on the field when you competition for players offers basically a glorified baby sitting service for 4 yrs.

Agreed. Not a bad thing at all. But part of our moving on has to include the great unwashed, non BMW driving public. This is what many fail to see: Billy Tubbs was in one sense an attempt to get beyond that -- at least until his lynching. June Jones, while very different from Tubbs, has been another. And now we're trying to get him too, to run him over with our new, white 2011 Range Rovers.

So is it really all that confusing when we just ooze exclusivity, i.e. "you are not a part of us and never can be," but then are shocked when no one comes to games? Hello?

We need to drop the Pride, capital P, immediately. And never allow it to return. Open up, be Dallas' team -- all of Dallas. Combine that with the aspirations and resources you mention above and we're back.

I agree with that - not to be corny - but we need to be more like Peruna - small and fiesty is what people love to support - an underdog that likes to kick some [deleted] from time to time.

Small and exclusive feels like you are hanging with Biffy and Winthrop at the club - after about 10 minutes you kind of hope THEY get their [deleted] kicked.

We need to do what USC did - brand it so that it takes on more of the personality of the city at large and be inviting and friendly. We should be in LA asking about their best practices and how that evolved and get their playbook.

Of course - really successful helps also, so we might want to start with hiring a world class recurting team pronto.

Tri-polar Personality Disorder is what I resume after reading the posts. I love the directness of Maize n Blue's question, which is worthy of discussion and action.

I am a Sixties Mustang, who attended almost every home game (as most students did then) in the Cotton Bowl. Although we might have been over matched personnel wise, we played a great brand of football and were both competitive and relevant on the regional and national stage. Although this was not the "big time" era of the early Eighties, Dallas and eastern teams/media paid attention, when the Mustangs were scheduled. Hayden Fry was key and his recruiting changed SMU and the SWC, i.e.

"The 1966 SMU squad was a special group of young men who knew how to play exciting football. The Mustangs were slow starters, but they knew how to come-from-behind to get the job done. They never quit on a game because there was always Jerry LeVias to make a clutch play or Dennis Partee to make the winning kick. All of the experts predicted SMU to finish in fifth place, but this team wanted to be champions. On November 27, 1966, the Mustangs proved all of their critics wrong by shutting out TCU to win the conference title in one of the 90 Greatest Moments in SMU Football History."

In the sixties, it was a given that we went to the Cotton Bowl. Today, the students have alternatives and distractions. I went to Northwestern game this year (against Rice, BTW) and the student body has there and it was loud and standing for most of the game. Of course, Notre Dame gets their students there and so does Vanderbilt, of all places.

Bringing the lost generation back and, but mostly importantly, the student body to Ford Stadium is Job One. Tradition raises expectiations, but excitement on the field and in the stands needs to be the new traditon. Pony Up!

SMU who are you? Are you the new, the old or somewhere in between? because you are pretty freaking hard to follow for a new fan like me. To me the Old is better but That would mean Blue Jerseys and I guess that ain't where it's at on the hilltop nowadays?

I was raised a SWC Mustang. I would have began freshman year in '87 but 2-25-87 changed my mind. I went to Princeton for 4 years. There I met and married, a little bit older than I, man who played at Michigan State. I went to SMU for a couple years after graduating Princeton.
I love our band and songs. Need bigger band and even more songs. I sit near the band most times with my mom and sister and sometimes other women to sing and dance and cheer.
I love horses so I love the mustangs. I don't love cutting off their nuts or having riders. (I'm against cutting things off whether it's docking, cropping or human circumcisions).
We grew up around animals like horses. We had one shetland stallion and he was the meanest SOB of a horse I've ever known. Could not get near him. Had to keep him away from everything else.
I don't hate June Jones but I'm ready to start with someone better and would like Kliff Kingsbury to be on that staff. (As American Indian, the word "warpath" makes me cringe. I never use it).
Blue Jerseys are better. I'd have so many great uniforms for the teams. My men's teams would not wear white pants and shoes at home games.
I got relatives who get called to duty like you.

I am an 80s thru today mustang fan i have fond memories of my Dad jumped off the couch watching the pony express he got so excited he scared the whole house it was then and there I decided it was cool as [deleted] to be a pony fan!
