Ohio State on Tuesday received a postseason ban for the 2012 season among other penalties from the NCAA, which ruled on the school's infractions case, The Columbus Dispatch and ESPN are reporting.
The penalties from the NCAA's infractions committee include a one-year bowl ban, nine lost scholarships during the next three years (three per year) and two years of probation. Former Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel also received a show-cause penalty from the NCAA, which makes any school that hires Tressel subject to penalties unless it proves why it should escape sanctions.
The bowl ban prohibits Ohio State from playing in the Big Ten championship game in 2012.

Ohio State walks between the raindrops or this is further proof that the NCAA hates Methodists (or in USC's case - lapsed Methodists). I wonder how the Dark Lords from Indy are going to justify this one.

Aggravating

Jim Tressel probably won't coach in college again.
Re: Ohio State Gets Bowl Ban
Compared to our treatment in the 80s the punishment definitely does not fit the crime. On the other hand, the coaches and administrators who let these things happen and/or lie about them should suffer instead of the innocent players and fans. The NFL could go a long way toward helping the sport if they could find a legal way to ban people like Tressell from coaching pros.

well maybe after 5 Tatto-Gates in 12 years-Ohio St might get the Death Penalty. Seriously you aren't comparing Ohio St's situation to SMU's are you. Do you have any reasonable sense of perspective

some bottom barrel team that hasn't been to a bowl game in a long time might just be willing to say, "it's going to take a year or two to rebuild anyway, so what the hell?"
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Re: Ohio State Gets Bowl Ban
In context of recent penalties...
this is about 1/3 of what USC got for basically the actions of 1 player versus the actions of 8-10 players at Ohio St.
It is also the exact same penalty Boise St got (with the addition of missing one bowl game) for allowing incoming freshmen to sleep on other players' couches for a couple of weeks during the summer until the dorms opened for the year.

USC's case involved hundreds of thousands in illegal benefits to the best player in the US giving USC a competitive advantage.

Come on Stallion, you are a reasonable and intelligent person. Can't you see the iniquity built into the NCCA when it comes to it's Infractions Committe? Not even including SMU.

The player was already at USC. The benefits (from a third party unaffiliated with USC) weren't to induce him to go to USC (or even stay), but for marketing opportunities after he became a pro.

Re: Ohio State Gets Bowl Ban
Well, USC's was really for being non-cooperative. However, the difference between what happened at Boise and Ohio is pretty clear. One involves boosters giving players benefits, the other one is the school messing up by not interpreting a rule correctly. I don't think those are really equivalent.
I guess the actual Ohio St players who were involved did serve suspensions, so that is better than most of these situations, but it still seems like they got a pretty light sentence.

No reasonable and intelligent person could possibly come to the conclusion that the SMU and Michigan situations are comparable. Now carry-on with the SMU-centric non-sense thinking

Yes Stallion I have a very reasonable sense of perspective. You improperly inferred that I concluded that SMU's situation in the 80s is equivalent to OSU's current situation. Yes, I did compare the two, and I came to the conclusion that OSU's penalty was on the light side given that we received a death penalty for admittedly more widespread problems. You should really get a life and stop trying to boost your self image by putting down other people.
