How about this:

Klemm has a great personality and happened to have fantastic contacts in California. Those contacts got his foot in the door with kids SMU had no chance of getting in texas. So, we ran with it while it lasted, smartly, because there was a lot of potential there. Refocusing Klemm on a different area made no sense, because a lot of his success was about personal contacts on the left coast. So, we went with the best recruits we could get, which were Klemms. No conspiracy. It wasn't that the other coaches weren't doing anything, it is just that the best options were filling a lot of the slots already.

Turn the page - Klemm is gone. Some of the recruits were not solid to begin with, and they are now getting offers from other schools. Leach goes to Wash St and steals a couple - make sense, because that coach has a wide open offense like JJ, sends kids to the pros like JJ, and the school is closer and they will be able to play games in their hometown every once in a while. He will take the same undersized WR or RB and turn them into slot recievers just like JJ, so it all makes sense. Probably would have happened, even with Klemm still around.

Now, we need to move forward. And if the rumor I heard is true about who we are going to hire to replace Klemm, I expect Mitch and all of the folks overreacting to post absolute praise for the hire.

Without reading all the posts and just kind of thinking (but not very well right now because holiday time is so busy).

Do y'all think that Shawn Bell would make a great state of Texas recruiter?
Right now he coaches at West Magnolia. He knows the state. I believe his dad's a coach too. But at 28 he's young.
I know he's a Bear.
I know I saw a video piece on ihigh.com Houston from vype magazine North Houston.

He's the type of young guy I'm trying to think of who could be a nice recruiter in state.

Mitch will be jumping up and down. I do believe it will take some time but we will move forward if this is the hire.

All I want these coaches to do is recruit - which is something they have failed to grasp in their time here.

If we are talking about that guy from that place that's somewhere in this state then thats fine. I don't know anything about him.

Then hire someone they can personally relate to on their level. That's how it is done. There also a lot of positives about Big D that they would relate to. Any one that followed Ron Meyer knows the No. 1 thing he sold was Big D. June Jones' staff does not seem to sell Dallas enough. This is one thing Nick or SMT or whoever is always talking about. Sell Dallas. He had good timing I'll admit with J.R. Ewing mystic and playing on the Dallas Cowboys field but there is something there kids can relate to if its presented right.

Just communicate with kids and give them a reason to believe in you.

Meyer definitely sold Dallas along with a little Dallas cash (LOL). Speaking of the show Dallas aren't they going to be start a new "Dallas" TV series pretty soon? It would be great timing.

Selling Dallas and being able to start right away and shine (big fish in small pond) should be the message. And we'll be able to get you to the pros don't worry. Have ES give them a call if within the rules. Last I checked, he's not doing too bad. I don't care where they come from, but to me it seems a no brainer that a 4 or 5 star would want to come here ... beautiful campus, hot chicks, great education, will start right away ... I'm left coast biased so I was loving the recruits out here (felt like a fresh start for us since the players out here don't have the stereotype TX has of us bc they didn't know anything about us).

What about the ability to fit in and feel comfortable on campus for the kids that don't come from privileged backgrounds? Just asking.

I think it affects more than just the under-priviledged. My grandaughter (who certainly doesn't lack priviledges) selected another school. She had over 20 offers and SMU was the first to offer. She didn't exactly come out and say so but I got the impression she was put off by the attitude of the 'SMU' people.

Fro someone who was definitely not privileged, I can say first hand SMU is a tough place ... culture shock for me was intense ... HOWEVER these are male athletes and have traits going for them that I certainly never had ... this is going to sound extremely crass, but they have interests that can push passed the culture issues and SMU can fulfill those interests in spades (I won't say any more).

@ ojaipony: I would imagine SMU is one of the few schools where being a football player doesn't get you laid a lot. 95% of SMu girls probably couldn't name one 1 starter...
