Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- With Texas preparing for its first Rose Bowl appearance, university officials are working up a new contract with a raise for coach Mack Brown.

"We like what we've got," Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds told the Associated Press on Monday. "He's done a wonderful job with the program."

Which program is most overdue for another title?
Georgia
Notre Dame
Texas

Dodds said that details would be announced later in the week but that Brown would get a raise on a salary that currently pays him slightly more than $2 million per year. He is one of the highest-paid coaches in college football. Brown's assistants also could get a raise.

Brown was at practice Monday morning and, through a spokesman, declined comment.

Although Brown has been criticized for a five-game losing streak to Big 12 South rival Oklahoma, Texas (10-1) has won at least 10 games the last four seasons and has become a regular fixture among the top 10 in the Associated Press rankings during his seven-year tenure.

The Rose Bowl will also be Texas' first appearance in a Bowl Championship Series game. The Longhorns meet No. 13 Michigan (9-2) on Jan. 1.

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I want a job where I can fail to reach the loftiest goals and standards, and still get raises. That sounds like a really good gig.

he is by most rational standards in the Top 5% of his profession-he should be paid accordingly-despite the petty hatred of anything Orange on this board. I gurantee you he could get the same type of contract on the open market if he wanted to leave-not many coaches have 4 straight top 10 finishes. Florida St. still paid Bowden despite losses to Miami. If you take away games lost to the single premier program in the country with perhaps the nation's best record over the last 5 years then his record would be simply gaudy. Perhaps SMU fans should remember that as SMU struggles annually with about about 3 teams in the Bottom 10 in the Nation.

His $50,000 bonus for going to a BCS bowl is why the ESPN/whatever coaches poll that will be a major factor in the BCS championship choices is a steaming pile of dog do do.

BCS is slowly destructing, and really the only fair way of providing a NCAA DIV IA championship is a playoff with conference champions making the playoffs.

An even better coaching job is the one at SMU. Head football coaches get pay raises and contract extensions even when they don't deliver the results that they were brought in to achieve.

I have to agree with PonySnob about SMU.

As to Mack, he does the least with the most of any of the big time college football programs. In his 20+ years as a head coach he has never won a CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP let alone a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Add to that his embarrassing record against OU, and Top 25 ranked teams, it is amazing to me that they are talking raise.

I spoke to a UNC alum who knows Mack Brown very well. He couldn't say enough nice things about the guy, and he also slammed UNC for not stepping up to the plate to keep him. But anyone wearing burnt orange is not someone that I will support. I hope Michigan kicks their backsides all the way back to the Colorado River. UT is learning that they had a good deal in the SWC. A lot of beatable teams and local rivalries. They now are in a meat grinder known as the Big XII. They have to beat OU, OSU, every year in addition to old SWC foes. Plus they get CU, Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri, and even Kansas trying to knock them off.

Well I thought it was about "those kids". Wow, I bet Mack Daddy didn't even think about that $50,000 bonus incentive, or the new pay increase he is about to receive. It is all about those sweet, little innocent Boy Scouts on his roster! WHAT A STEAMING PILE OF BEVO DUNG!!!!! :x

There was a story in today's paper about Vincent Young, and Cedric (pass that joint) Benson talking trash! But the Michigan players showed class and refrained from a response.

Associated Press
LOS ANGELES -- Football coach Mack Brown and Texas agreed to a 10-year contract worth more than $25 million that would keep him at the university through 2014.

"We're excited about everything Mack has done in building our football program back into one of the nation's elite," athletic director DeLoss Dodds said Wednesday, three days before the sixth-ranked Longhorns face No. 13 Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

"He's a perfect fit for us," Dodds said.

The new deal needs approval from the school's board of regents, but Dodds said he thinks that won't be a problem.

Brown's old pact runs through 2011, Dodds said. The new contract would boost Brown's $2.06 million annual salary by $100,000 in the first year, with additional $100,000 raises each year. He'd earn a little more than $3 million in 2014.

"We've had a great seven years, and I'm really excited about the future," Brown said. "There is no greater place to coach than the University of Texas."

Brown, already one of the highest-paid coaches in college football, has led Texas to four straight seasons with at least 10 victories and is 69-19 in Austin.

He has never won a conference title in 21 seasons as a head coach. He has won two Big 12 South conference titles (1999 and 2001) but lost both conference championship games.

The Rose Bowl will be the first Bowl Championship Series appearance for the Longhorns (10-1).

Dodds said he saw no reason to wait until after the season to draw up a new contract for Brown.

"Winning and losing is real important. It's important to me, it's important to Mack, it's important to the kids," Dodds said. "This is about the long haul."
