I'll believe this Phillips-to-SMU talk when it's official.
At this point ... wait and see.

Would be really nice to get JP. He has good connections in Louisiana and Houston. He also has some great commitments in our positions of need (OL, DL).

I was unaware that JJ tried to hire him 4 yrs ago. Perhaps this time he will get the deal done.

I read that earlier today and that Sumlin talked him into staying at UH then. The article then stated that w/the change in coaching staff, they couldn't see him staying. Read it online at chron.com.

I don't know a lot about the guy, other than the fact that he was fast as hell when he played at Cougar High, but what I have read here about him sure sounds impressive.

Besides the head coach trying to do too much as far as game management, play calling, substitutions, keeping up with injuries etc I think this was the biggest problem with our offense for the past four years..not having a top notch receiver coach who can evaluate what it takes to be a receiver at this level and can really coach the position. I don't see Philips taking an SMU position unless as coordinator and/or designated "head coach" in waiting for when JJ retires or God calls him to look around or Steinburg needs a commision again. This might help with recruiting to stabilize the argument that June is going to leave if somebody will hire him. Great if he comes!

I'd be ok with that

If/when do you think any announcement would be made if we were actually hiring him?

I would imagine they would wait for Houston's and our bowl games to be over?

Wait for UH's bowl sounds right, less of a reason to wait until we win our game.

I think it would be great to get him as an assistant head coach offense or OC. He would be valuable in perhaps tweaking the rns offense to put in some different looks and different wrinkles for our opponents. As said earlier he would be a big help in recruiting. I'd love to get him.

I suspect that we probably won't know anything until SMU has played its bowl game.

I think there is a national college coaches convention that starts Wednesday or something like that. That's usually when some of staffs are built in their entirety.
