Not a crime. No one MAKES your daughter go to SMU. There are less expensive colleges available. But if we want to continue to widen the gap between the classes, we have to keep pricing the 99% out.

Having gone through college cost research in 2008 SMU is about average for a private school.
My point being that a college education costs is exceedingly expensive to what the average family makes. Students have choices such as a junior college, then state college and can get an education on the cheap. However part of the college learning cure is moving away from home as a freshman, roommate issues, home sickness, doing your own laundry, making your own meals, and so forth. We have family friends that sent their child to a local junior college and lived at home. The aforementioned experiences are lost opportunities.
To the SMU_Fan1 coming into SMU. An SMU degree in the DFW area has value. Once you get an SMU e-mail account look at the job postings at this SMU site for students.
Although I highly agree that college tuition is rising rapidly as compared to many other areas, it must also be realized that when I graduated from SMU in the same class as bubba pony, I got a pretty decent job at $800/month. So things are all relative with time.

When I graduated from High School I had a summer job at the minimum wage of $1.50/hour. SMU cost $2000 / $1.50 = 1,333 hours to raise that much money.
Today SMU cost $52,000 / 1,333 hours means a person would have to make $39/hour to have the same financial commitment as we had so many years ago. I believe we are all saying the same thing but wanted to stress my point, that the cost of a college education is way out of touch with what the average family makes. We at least had a chance way back then.
As you guys remember I was given "Conditional admission" for 2013 as long as I complete 24 credit hours with a 2.7 GPA. When I took my visit my admission counselor and a person from the business told me I needed to bring up my ACT score if I really wanted a chance at acceptance. I listened, took their advice and received the scores back yesterday and made exactly what they told me I needed to. I have already received the letter though. I emailed my admission counselor and Wes Waggoner pleading for another review of my application.
Any ideas of what else I could do?????? Its so frustrating when I did exactly what I was instructed to do and believe it should be worth something!
I don't know that it would be horrible to take 9-12 hrs at Northlake or Collin or wherever this spring, another 6-9 this summer, and 12-15 in the Fall of 12..if your conditional admission is for Fall of 13, some mo' in the spring/summer, save a chunk of $$, get your AA or AS or whatever, roll into SMU as a junior and get an SMU degree for half the cost
SMU_Fan 1----The advice given about Northlake is solid. My husband started at Eastfield (after flunking out of FSU) and finished at SMU. He has had a very successful career as a mechanical engineer. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED. If you go to a 2 year school till 2013,, there is still room at the 2012 football games for you. Get involved with SMU sports until you enroll==that way you can connect with your future alma mater. Connect up with the Red and Blue Army on FB; that would give you a group to help you become familiar with SMU. You are the type of fan we want; someone who has the drive to succeed academically, wants to be at SMU, and appears to love us. Good luck in college==we will be waiting to welcome you to SMU.
Also, don't get discouraged. Admissions folks sift through a lot of data this time of year, so keep reminding them who you are until you get an answer.

To that note. Work very closely with the admissions counselor regarding what will transfer. I know that they recommended brookhaven to me b/c of transfer hours counting for more of the classes

Where do you live? If close enough, set up a meeting with the admissions director - the person at the top. One of the many things I appreciated about SMU was the fact that you had access to anybody you wanted to talk to. Never got the brush-off - from anybody. Although we did not have a president my senior year, I did meet with Chancellor Willis Tate on two occasions. I can't say enough good things about my SMU experience.

It costs 13K per year in ct to send my Toddler. That is almost exactly what i paid to attend SMU including room, board, frat dues, and beer. Insane.
