Aggies: Football good, academics ???

Postby Silk » Sat Apr 27, 2002 7:45 pm

Here is a list of the schools which sent 25 or more players to the NFL and what percentage of them have degrees:

Notre Dame, 42 (67 percent)
California, 26 (54 percent)
Syracuse, 26 (54 percent)
North Carolina, 30 (50 percent)
Nebraska, 33 (48 percent)
Colorado, 26 (42 percent)
Penn State, 34 (41 percent)
Southern California, 29 (38 percent)
Virginia, 27 (37 percent)
Florida State, 42 players (35 percent)
LSU, 26 (35 percent)
Miami, 38 (32 percent)
Washington, 26 (31 percent)
Arizona State, 26 (31 percent)
Georgia, 30 (30 percent)
Tennessee, 35, (29 percent)
Michigan, 36 (25 percent)
Wisconsin, 30 (23 percent)
Florida, 31 (19 percent)
Texas A&M, 39 (18 percent)
Ohio State, 35 (17 percent)
Auburn, 25 (16 percent)
Michigan State, 26 (15 percent)

So what this shows is that not only can R.C. Slocum guide his team to a win in a big game, he also can't can't guide his players to the classroom. Think he has any idea where the classrooms are?

The good folks in aggieville always claim to have a great school, particularly in agriculture (of course), engineering, etc. But this list is shameful. Finishing fourth from the bottom is pathetic. Ohio State and Auburn had always been a joke, academically. A little bit surprised to see Michigan State at the bottom - I always thought that was a decent school, or at least that their athletes were encouraged to at least register for a class or two.

Another surprise: The absence of the Texas Orange Cows from the list. Do they not have 25 alums (or should I say "former players" -- didn't want to suggest that their players graduate) in the NFL?

And who would have thought that those anti-Ivy Leaguers at Florida State and LSU would have a higher graduation rate than Michigan?

Speaking of Aggies who never saw a classroom or a textbook, whatever happened to Jamar Toombs? That guy was a 270+ pound running back. As a fresman, people were saying he's better (and faster) than Jerome Bettis. As a sophomore, he was killing people almost every game. In the bowl game that year, he was unstoppable. Then he declared for the draft, showed up at the combine really overweight, and went undrafted last year. He went back to school - couldn't play, but he supposedly was training for this year's draft.

Did he get picked this year? Anyone know what became of him?
