A break for the mid majors

Postby mrydel » Fri Dec 31, 2004 12:45 pm

During this slow day I was pondering what could help even out the playing field between the BCS goons and the mid-majors. Obviously there is a recruiting advantage by being a BCS school. High School kids see the glitz and glamour of the "big time". But many of those kids are stock piled at various BCS schools and never see appreciable playing time. They are, often signed by a BCS school not to be a player, but rather to keep them from going elsewhere. Or they just do not fit the offensive or defense scheme for the team for which they signed perhaps due to a change of coaching staff or style. My suggestion would be to allow transfers from BCS schools to non BCS Division IA schools with immediate eligiblity. I think that would eliminate the stock piling and would also allow some immediate impact to some mid majors after a player becomes disillusioned with his prospects with the BCS team. Just a thought. I would be curious if anyone else thinks this would help. Then we can all say: " it doesn't matter, the big boys would never let this happen anyway."

The NCAA would never allow that to happen because they specifically put that rule in to help keep teams in 1-AA from moving up to Division I-A. Its worked to some degree. Delaware won't move up because it gets lots of sophomore transfers. If that were to change, then 1-A would be looking at a good half dozen more programs trying to get in. Delaware, James Madison, Richmond, Villanova, U Mass, Maine all come to mind.

Count the number of BCS schools-then count the number of non-BCS schools-your plan would never pass-its funny how a monopoly works isn't it. Why do you think there is no desire to see the Big East dropped from the BCS-because the BCS would lose its voting monopoly and the present system would be terminated.

I do not see a great problem with IAA moving upwards in great droves due to other requirements like attendance, facilities, costs, but I do realize the powers that be would not let it happen. My thoughts were that the monopoly has basically forced us to a level near IAA status already so it would be nice to be able to obtain some of the benefits that the IAA divisions have over us. The mid majors are getting hit by both sides.
