BB Recruiting

Postby Mustangs_Maroons » Tue Jan 03, 2012 11:10 pm

Since the recruiting folder is mostly if not exclusively dedicated to football, I wanted to ask the resident basketball experts why we didn't extend an offer to a PG this year. It seems like we're bringing in 3 good prospects but no offers made for a PG. If we can't penetrate and have limited court vision from the PG position, how are we supposed to get the ball to these other players. We settle too much for 3 pointers and I think that's partly a function of not having a PG that can penetrate.

Do we have any alternative options besides J-Frog?

Frog had a very good frosh year & Manuel is an '11 kid. Both Ofoegbu & Bernardi can handle pretty well, in Uche's case, very well. '13 is the PG cycle

We'll just play slow & ugly vs the Big East too. Our style is like a virus, infects every team w/decent athletes that we play. We may not win, but you'll hate playing us for 40 minutes etc.

Also, Nick Russell is eligible next year, transfer from k state. He'll run some point too

"RYAN is a very lean and lanky guard who can get to the rim with slithery moves through traffic and finishes well against bigger players. He has great length to see and pass over the defense and has the wing span and size to really harass the ball on defense. He can handle the ball well, is a good passer, can knock down shots with 3 point range and can create off the dribble. He has a smooth and easy stroke in the mid-range off the dribble, plays under control and has a good feel with the ball in his hands.
3 stars 6'5" 170 " QUOTE PER 2011 TEXAS HOOPS.
Manuel is probably the best penetrator on our squad but that's not the style of ball Doh wants to play. We will never see what our frosh can do if we don't give them more time to get experience like Jfrog got last year AND this year. Can you imagine what the frosh can do if they got 36-47 mins of PT???

I can imagine that they found a way to discover 7 extra minutes per game in college hoops since they last only 40 minutes. :D

But really-there are VERY few players in college hoops that average more than 35 minutes per game.

I know everyone is down on Jsam and yes he does have many limitations (discussed plenty here) but he also has some strengths when compared to anyone else we can put on the floor at PG.

- he is the BEST ballhandler on the team and it ain't close. many of the other guys struggle against pressure
- he runs the offense the way the coaches want it to be run (regardless of whether you think that we are running the offense that we should)
- 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio and 4 dimes a game
- his shooting percentages are pretty awful this season but last year he shot 42% from field and 39% from 3, so he has shown to be able to shoot the rock in the past
- 80%+ foul shooter

I am high on Manuel. His ceiling is MUCH greater than JSam and is a more dynamic player. But I am tired of hearing people say things like JSam isn't a d1 player or he shouldn't get any minutes. That is just false.

47 mins refers to 2OT OSU game.
The comment really was addressing the need for a guard that can penetrate and we do have that.

Bottom line... this team has all the pieces it needs to be very successful. The challenge here is that the coaching staff needs to:
1. Maximize the talent we do have
2. Establish a team identity
3. Get players to buy into the system

Good points as Jfrog or Jsam as you say, has his limitations but he sees the floor better than some on here would think. He is pretty court savy as a court general, but his size is an issue on defense.

We have two very underutilized post players in Smith & Vilde. Vilde should play, for one, and Smith deserves 5 touches a game on the low block. He can turn over either shoulder, and has up'n'under moves. Both Smith and vilde gave Dia all he could handle in practice last season. Vilde's use or misuse is pretty inexcusable
