Ohio State will *not* get the DP (although they should, IMO). Ohio State is a publicly funded university (note that little word 'state' in their name) whereas SMU is a privately funded university. Big difference. The NCAA knows that to level such a penalty on a publicly funded university would never fly.

Somehow I get the feeling that there's been a blackballing of any SMU reference. Has anyone heard ONE inkling of SMU/dp in all of the Ohio State discussions? I don't know if maybe people just don't want to get ideas flying around, or if dp discussion is just off limits. It seems it would be a logical segue...there's been plenty of talk of whether jobs will be lost (i.e. AD & Head Coach)...why not dp talk?

Guys, if there's one thing every university in the land learned, it's once you get caught, assist the NCAA in the investigation process. As long as you do, the DP will never be handed out. We told them to shove it and paid the price.
The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

They clearly are death penalty eligible. But they won't get it. Too much money involved. The SMU, University of San Francisco, Centenary, they will be the ones to get whacked if whacking is to be done. Ohio State, Michigan, Minnesota, Georgia, will always get the wrist slaps. I thought for sure that Fresno would get hit harder (because they hired Tarkanian which was equivalent to flipping a big bird at the NCAA), but as pointed out above, they cooperated and got off with penalties already self assessed.

Did I miss something? All of you who say Ohio State is clearly eligible for the death penalty...I thought that penalty was reserved for offenders who are caught a 2nd time while still on probation from another violation.

Don't know that it matters, regardless. There have been several schools "eligible" since we got that penalty, and each time the NCAA has come up with an excuse not to hand down the penalty again. Administrations change, but I had heard years ago that David Berst acknoledged he did not think the NCAA would ever use that penalty again after admitting they grossly underestimated the financial impact on a school (based on the SMU case)
