Just got back from the game.

Great job by the girls. The score doesnt show how dominate they really were. Girls just opened it up in the 2nd half! Great job!!

Don't know about that. . . we were up only 44-42 with 10 minutes to play. At that point, it was a close game with neither team able to pull away. That's about the time the foul calls started to even up as well.

Now, the 33-16 run after that to close was dominating. The three's by Kendall, Katie and Rob (how about that!) really took the wind out of Tulsa's sails. I think you could tell our girls really wanted this one.

But after last year (when Pongonis hit 3 three's in the final minute to beat us), this one wasn't over until Tulsa put in the scrubs with around a minute left.

Great start by Rhonda's girls. Tough road trip starting in Fresno on Thursday. Listen to them on 1630 on your way home from the men's game.

I enjoyed watching the women's team play against Tulsa. They showed lots of energy, good ball handling and team play. The game was thoroughly entertaining. 11-1...hell of a good start to the season. Go lady Mustangs...keep the streak going!!!!

We don’t give the women’s team the attention they deserve.....I’m as guilty as anyone. They are off to a fantastic start. If you take away one bad half (the 1st half against TCU) they could easily be undefeated. I looked at the polls and Tulsa was receiving votes for the top 25 (approximately the 35th ranked team) in the AP. When next week's poll comes out we should get votes and if we win at Fresno (ranked #30) on Thursday, we could crack the top 25.

BTW, when was the last time our men's or women's bball team was ranked?

The ladies are tied for 30th with OSU and Md. for blocks per game. I was beginning to think no one was paying any attention to us.

The last time the mens team was ranked I believe would be 1985. I dont have a reference or source for that, its just from memory, so I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure that was it. The men won the SWC title in 1988, but I dont think they were ever ranked in the polls that year.

The womens team has never been ranked in either the AP or ESPN/Coaches poll. They were a permanent fixture in the "Other Teams Recieving Votes" section from 1992 to 2001, but never made it into the top-25. Athlon Magazine and Street & Smith both have had them ranked in their pre-season polls, and there are a couple of websites that do their own rankings that have put them in the top-25, the last time would have been in 2000, when they won the WAC and beat NC State in the NCAA tournament. They've never been ranked in the 2 main polls, though, close but no cigar.

Other odds and ends:

The Tulsa game was the first time the womens team has ever played a game on New Years Day.

11-1 is the teams best start. The ladies are 9-0 at home, matching the team record for consecutive home wins. The record for most home wins in a single season is 12, which they have an excellent chance of reaching.

SMU is still first in the WAC in Team Defense, allowing just 54.8 points per game, but they have slipped to 2nd in Team Offense, just 1/10th of a point behind Fresno (69.4-69.3). The Lady Mustangs lead the WAC in field goal percentage defense (32.8%), Steals (11 per game) and Rebounds (45 per game). The ladies are also first in Assists, Turnover Margin, and Assist/turnover ratio.

Rice and Tulsa were supposed to have the strongest frontcourts in the WAC this year, but Janielle Dodds schooled them both, putting up 43 points and grabbing 22 rebounds in the 2 games. Rice's All-WAC center, Lauren Neaves, had just 8 points and 7 rebounds against SMU. Tulsa forward Megan Moody and center Becky Heidotten combined for just 3 points. Dodds may earn her 2nd WAC Player of the Week award, although Amber Jackson of San Jose, and Tasha Crain of La. Tech also had big weekends, and any of those 3 would be worthy choices.

Rice and Tulsa were Janielle's 6th and 7th career double-doubles. She is currently 4th in the WAC in both scoring (14.5 ppg) and rebounding (9.0 rpg).

at 11-1 SMU has the best overall record in the WAC, and at 2-0 is tied for the conference lead with Fresno and La. Tech. Both SMU and Tech will travel to Fresno this week. Fresno is 10-1 overall, with their only loss coming against 16th ranked UCLA.

Katie Cobb is shooting 89% (16/18) from the free throw line, but doesnt have enough attempts to qualify for the WAC stats. Kendall Shead is shooting 85% from the line, and is 2nd in the WAC in free throw percentage. Katie Gross is shooting 81% and Sarah Davis is at 80%. Shead also leads the WAC in assists, steals, and assist/turnover ratio.

Sarah Davis needs 4 blocked shots to pass Kate Remke for 2nd place on the womens career list. At her current pace, Sarah would break the womens record of 139 career blocks (Karlin Kennedy) early next season. Its possible she could even catch Ira Terrell (169 blocks) for the 2nd highest total in school history. The SMU record for career blocks is 278, held by Jon Koncack.

Over the past 3 games Katie Gross is shooting 75%, 12/16, from 3-point range.

Defensively, SMU held its last 5 non-conference opponents under 50 points, but that streak came to an end against Rice.

Thats all I can think of now, tomorrow we'll have a chat about the RPI, and where SMU stands in the computer rankings.

If you insist...

Conference Overall Div I
School RPI Rank
Tulsa 0.6342 25
La Tech 0.6268 30
Fresno St 0.6180 37
SMU 0.6108 40
Hawaii 0.5991 50
Rice 0.5583 79
San Jose St 0.5039 146
UTEP 0.4685 190
Nevada 0.4683 191
Boise St 0.4655 195

The WAC is the 7th rated conference overall. Very good start! Keep it up ladies!

I'm not positive, but I think the men's team was ranked around 25th at the end of the 92-93 season when we went 20-8 and won the SWC.

I doubt it. That team got upset in the first round of the SWC tournament, and had an RPI of around 60. They barely made it into the NCAA tournament. They were never ranked.

This site has all the AP rankings, going back to 1949. The last time SMU was ranked in that poll was March 5th, 1985.
