Re: Tulsa game threadI think you need to temper that comment, Travis.
We don't have the talent relative to a Top 25 team. I think we have talent -- unrefined as it is -- that still needs to mesh but is also good enough to compete to be an upper echelon CUSA. This is arguably the best win of the year. To rally and win on the road is a combination of being smart and using your talent to win a game like this.
Re: Tulsa game thread
AGREE!! Great win and Jfrog DID come up huge down the stretch!! Maybe when we get to the Big East, we'll be able to draw those 2 NBA prospects that will help us win championships.
Re: Tulsa game threadLet's also remember this:
Winning on the road in your conference is really really hard. Doesn't matter if its at Memphis or at East Carolina, it's really hard. And you treat those wins like gold.
Re: Tulsa game threadTulsa isn't awful. They just won at TCU last week and TCU gave Virginia its only loss of the season.
And Tulsa has lost its first two CUSA games by 3 total points? Tough losses. We know the feeling.
Re: Tulsa game threadI look for this team to continue to improve as the season wears on and for them to be very competitive in CUSA. I like the fact that both PGs (Frog and Manuel) are close to 2:1 in assists:turnover. They are doing a better job of protecting and distributing than what we've seen from our PG in the past. Played good team D last night and Tulsa had 17 turnovers at home. That's pretty strong.
Good win. Now let's rock Moody and beat the Owls
Re: Tulsa game threadI was at the TCU vs TULSA game in FW TCU could not get near the basket to score . Tulsa looked like giants. I had to Google their record thinking perhaps they were on some big winning streak not.
If your looking for a good win over TCU show up to this game in Feb

+1 Everyone should try to make the TCU game on wednesday February 8. Mark your calendars now! "This is . . . dedication to distraction by fans. Is that what I'm going to go with Jay?"

Re: Tulsa game thread1) Virginia is a paper tiger. They haven't played much, and I doubt they look much like they do on paper today, by the end of the ACC season.
2) TCU is improved from last year, and Christian may get axed, but they just allowed him to hire an entire new staff this offseason. Generally, an AD only does that if they are going to give the guy a few more years, see Doh, mangino, Hobbie, Pooh... 3) I saw Tulsa 3 times over Thanksgiving in Charleston, and they can play. Clarkson is better than any individual player we have, and they have men on the front line, compared to our frosh. 4) I debate the notion that Manuel is a natural 2. Every notable evaluator/trainer I've talked to about it, thinks of him as a PG prospect. 5) Doh is frustrating cause we always take bad OOC losses. People need to separate that from what we've seen this year, 9 new faces, 6 frosh, and a very difficult system. People get so red(myself included) after gut wrenching losses to Ole Miss & OSU, that they really don't see the improvement. We played our gamel in those games, could have easiily won all 3. More importantly, the system started to move better, lots more motion. Took another step at tulsa. Most importantly, we're dictating pace on everyone again. When that happens, the rubber tends to meet the road. 6) To win natty's, you need NBA players, that simple. One team in history has won it all minus a McD AA, and that's Maryland. At some point, especially w/the move to the BE, need some top 50 national types. Whether people love Doh or not, He's ready for that move in recruiting. That's one area of the progam that is ramping up yearly. Not only is Doh a nationally elite recruiter, he & hobbie are wired in NYC & NJ, which is Big East country baby.
Re: Tulsa game thread
I think Tulsa had an incredible OOC schedule for a CUSA team. They really scheduled up, and played a ton of good close games vs quality opposition. In that way, their record is deceiving, but I'm sure they thought they'd have a few more wins.
Re: Tulsa game thread
TB: Good point about Maryland. Who would have thought Steve B. for the Lakers from Maryland would have made the NBA? I know he wasn't on the National Championship team. They are wired in NYC and N.J. but those are still good areas but not like the "hotbed" they were back in the days of Chris Mullins, Pearl Washington, etc. Still won't beat Syracuse ( 35,000 at the Dome) on the really great ones that are 1 or 2 and on to the NBA[/quote] Cuse is in the ACC by the time we get to the Big East. No reason to fear recruiting against any of Rutgers, Seton Hall, St Johns, Villanova etc. NYC isn't loaded like it used to be, but Jersey is. As for Blake, he was PG on the national championship Terp team, also won a high school title at Oak Hill & state championships playing for Frank Martin @ Miami Sr. One of the great true PGs in the game
Re: Tulsa game threadAwesome win!!! What a fantastic day for SMU fans! I hope this team finally turned the page and finishes the season with 20+ wins and post-season play. I really would love to be able to keep Doherty as our coach long-term. That said, he has to earn his keep.
