Re: Next year's 2-deep
There shouldn't be much of a drop off at safety with Jay Scott coming in for Banjo. Hopefully Roundtree will provide some competition as well.
Not sure how you think we are deep at DE? Margus is the only returning DE with significant playing time (unless grenier gets another year), but we have no proven DE after that. Hopefully a young guy steps up, as this is what happens when you start to become a "real program" and your true freshman don't have to be relied, red shirts step up and play roles without being known or having received playing time previously....just not sure who those guys are yet

Jay Scott any good? #7, right? I thought I saw him getting beat quite a bit.
DE ... Grenier, Barnes, Davis, Spencer, Wood ... deep enough for you? I thought Davis was a DT but someone on here said he was a DE ... Wood is kind of a tweener DE/OLB someone said although listed as DE on the roster ...

Re: Next year's 2-deep
DE: Hunt will be really good next year.
Other than that, Grenier is a good reserve. One of Barnes, Wood, Holloway, or Cameron Smith really needs to win the job. I really like Smith.
At Saftey, I would say that is a concern. Lose Banjo and Sorrell, who was a solid backup. Right now, we don't have anyone in place to allow us to run our nickel with the third saftey. Scott is decent, but at this point a step down from a healthy Banjo.

Hopefully Holloway and/or Moreland will get their butt in gear and come to SMU. I don't understand what the holdup is with those guys

Amen! I thought someone said on here that Moreland was more of an OLB but whatever ... kids like that find their way on the field and star (unless, of course, they don't ENROLL!).

Re: Next year's 2-deep
Wood is a tweener between DT and DE...not DE and OLB.
And no, it is not deep enough for me. Let's say Hunt and Grenier start..Barnes (walk on and needs to gain serious weight), Spencer (RS FR never played a college snap), Wood (RS FR never played a college snap) will be our reserves...hopefully one of them emerges. I am not saying they won't, just not sure you can consider that deep.
I heard Cameron Smith has been Practicing with the linebackers, but looks like he might have the size to play DE. Also, anyone know if Robert Seals is a linebacker or DE?

Re: Next year's 2-deep
I love the fact that we have many key position D players returning. And the LB corps is gonna be incredible. Nice to see we return skill players on O. And a lot of kids got plenty of experience this last season. Based on Jones timeframe, this coming season is the one to expect major improvement.

Not the end of the world, but I think it's unlikely that Rogers returns. He graduates in May, and even though he has another year of eligibility left, this isn't NCAA 12 for xbox.. There are other factors to consider

What do we hear about Bordano and Yenga? Are they doing well?

agree, he's looked solid in his limited PT this year. i would expect him to be a backup again next year, though.

Re: Next year's 2-deep
OK, I took a crack at it. A few things to consider:
1. I took the current roster off of the official SMU website. I did not include any 2012 true freshmen. I suppose I'll add them to my spreadsheet when the LOIs come in. That also means that I didn't consider Garret Gilbert, or any other transfers, or mid year additions (e.g. Moorland).
2. I assumed Grenier's extra year.
RT Bryan Collins/Kris Weeks
RG Jordan Free/ Christian Miller
C Blake McJunkin/Taylor Laski
LG Ben Hughes/Dontae Livingston
LT Ben Gottschalk/Taylor Reich
QB Kyle Padron/Conner Preston
RB Zach Line/K.C. Nlemchi
X Keenan Holman/Arrius Holleman
H Jeremy Johnson/Stephen Nelson
Y Der'rikk Thompson/Chayse Joubert
Z Darrius Johnson/Ryan Walker
DE Margus Hunt/Beau Barnes
NT Torlan Pittman/Aaron Davis
DE Kevin Grenier/Zach Woods
OLB J.G. Davis/Byron Brown
ILB Cameron Rodgers/Kevin Pope
ILB Taylor Reed/John Bordano
OLB Stephon Sanders/Jonathon Yenga
CB Kenneth Acker/Robney Hubert
CB Chris Parks/Darren Kitchen
FS Jay Scott/Hayden Greenbauer
SS Ryan Smith/Brett Haness(?)
I'll have to figure out where to upload some excel sheets.

Re: Next year's 2-deep
Isn't former starter Victor Jones returning? Kitchen left the program-didn't he? Replace him with James Richardson. WRs Ronnell Sims, Darius Joseph and hopefully Kyle Guinyards might be in the mix. Nyle Johnson? Nwaibuke, Cameron Smith and Robert Seals should contribute on defense. Jarrett Spencer has good size. We have so many guys who are decent prospects sitting on the bench-should be able to cover graduating losses much better than in prior years
