Move him up, give him a title. a lot less money and NO authority. What coach in their right mind would want this job with Doh telling them what to do?

Re: Official SMU/Rice Thread
what good head coach is gonna want Doh around? If you take Doh out of the head coach spot, what luster does he have left to fundraise personally? None. It sounds nice but has no practical chance of working.
Re: Official SMU/Rice Thread
I only took exception to it b/c the team was playing well, and seemed well coached last year. Very well coached, in fact. Also, last year was the last of the 'rehab' years IMO, in other words the original contract, not that Orsini rollover garbage. We no longer were in jeopardy of firing another guy early etc. We've done our part to rehab this puppy, now after putting that behind us, the facts of the tenure are the facts of the tenure. Blaise shoots 3s and faces, so he's not Papa in that way.
Re: Official SMU/Rice ThreadI'm not saying we were poorly coached last year, but I think having experience and having Papa in particular made us LOOK more well coached than we were. Sort of like Shumate in 1993. He had a team full of good upperclassmen who executed and made him look good for a year. I never had any confidence the Mangino band aid was sustainable. For one thing, if it worked temporarily, he would be lured away somewhere else, then what would Doh do? Stuff like that never works.
Re: Official SMU/Rice Thread
I gotcha. That's probably pretty accurate. As we've discussed, the roster planning/management is the greatest downfall. One minute we're counting on Paul McCoy as our PG, the next we're scrambling for JFrog late in the Spring of '10, just as a stop-gap. Now he's the anointed 4yr starter? As you know, if we have problems in the post, it's b/c we didn't recruit enough adequate bigs. Ultimately, the shortcomings don't matter as much as why they exist in the first place. This team has no one, other than Manuel, that can slash. If we're gonna say inexperience is a huge factor, which it is, well why 9 new faces in year 6. You can't rebuild after your first 20 win year, you have to build on it. They haven't, and they've had ample chances. It's just time. No hard feeling towards Doh, as it's not a program in turmoil and the roster is promising. He made a nice effort to rehab the position and get some DISD kids on the roster. All for the good. Too bad his results beyond that just stink
Re: Official SMU/Rice ThreadHe's a great director of recruiting, fundraising, etc. He got Peter Principled to head coach where is wholly ill-equipped. He needed about 5 more years as an assistant coach to learn all the things he needed to learn. Instead, he got an offer to be head coach at ND. Did an adequate job there and got an offer to go UNC and put his head into the mouth of a lion. He went there (who wouldn't) recruited a great class and fell flat on his face. As a result, he got let go and blamed everyone else. You might say his coaching development stopped at that point in time. His name was going to get him offers to be head coach and entre's into living rooms. But his on court performance is lacking. Even if he did not get renewed by SMU, he'd be getting offers from lots of Arky State's, St. Louis', Bradley's, Valpo's, etc. Not at SMU money. And he'd land some recruits for those schools as well. We just have to look and see how we'll survive for the next few years until we get into the BE. If we play like we're playing now, we'll be 0-18 in the BE. Heck Providence put a big whup on Louisville the other night and they've been a doormat of the BE for years.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Re: Official SMU/Rice Threadlack of paint penetration is just killing this team. Williams does it 1-2 times a game, and Manuel can when given the green light. Teams are blocking the passing lanes. Smith needs to go to Post Up camps or clinics.
Re: Official SMU/Rice ThreadWatched the North Texas-W Kentucky game tonight. 30 mile difference to watch a team run an efficient offense.
2015 INDIANAPOLIS OR BUST
Re: Official SMU/Rice Thread
No offense, but the Mean Green stink as bad, if not worse than we do right now. I've seen several of their games. Also, they played a team that's so bad off, they fired their coach, Ken McDonald, about a week a go. Then they proceeded to get beat by a team w/6 men on the court w/o recognizing it.
