But, you don't lose recruits over on assistant line coach, that was extremely likeable, but a green coach. If they really were committed to the school, to the program, to Dallas, and our coaching staff they wouldn't have de-committed. I wonder if Klemm was still here the same thing would not have happened?
Coupled with the inability of Klemm's recruits to even get into school was he really the recruiter we thought?
Those recruits were committed to Klemm, that much was never in doubt. We all knew they'd bail when he bailed which is why so many here didn't want to lose him. No way we'd end up losing all of Klemm's California recruits if he were still on staff. We'll see how his 2010/2011 recruits pan out.

This has been like a Science experiment on why its important to have young, agressive recruiters on your staff. I wonder what the Guiness Book of World Records is on most commitments to a single recruiter in a year. Klemm got like 14. Yeah he's pretty good

With no California recruits and no Adrian Klemm, less is more.
The more you peel back the onion on Klemm, he isn't the guy you think he is.
And I'll just leave it at that.
Do you're own digging.

I think he is a dynamic, outgoing recruiter. Just wish he had used it in our own backyard instead of Cali. Not sure how he was or is as a coach, that will be seen, but he is a good recruiter like it or not. I am very happy with our new hire and am confident we are moving in the right direction.

I think he will establish a reputation very similar to the one Trooper Taylor did at Auburn. Taylor got his start at Tulane and was involved in some messiness with Arlington Lamar kids when he was there. Taylor has bounced around to the point where he is a gypsy.
Adrian did a great job of selling the idea to inner city at-risk kids in Los Angeles -- ones who were going to struggle to get into school in the first place -- the opportunity of getting out of there. That's great. Starting new is something that every kid should evaluate. Now, Adrian has to change to the story when he sells. That's life as an assistant coach.
I'll give you that he can communicate with kids -- no question -- but something smells there. Given Jason Phillips' background, I think June has made a MAJOR addition to this staff.

I've done a complete 180 on this whole issue and now completely agree with MM on this one ... I'd like to see us cherry pick some Cali talent, but there's plenty in TX and if it brings more people to Ford because the local 'hero' is playing for us then that's what I'll push for. Then, as the wins pile up and the stadium fills over a few years, we will build that NATIONAL brand (that will then help us over time to cherrypick some of this Cali talent as we're more on those kids' radar as a national powerhouse).

We are also recruiting Florida hard now. The BE will allow us to stretch our recruiting area. If top recruits in Texas don't want to come to SMU then we came get some kids like Ty Law from Florida that got there scholarships yanked by NC State and WVU because they filled up. Or Gehrig Dieter from Indiana who many overlooked not knowing he was working with a speed coach. We also have Cali JUCO player Roundtree visiting this weekend. We have an offered for a kid in Jersey that has world class speed. So I am sure we will hit Texas next year but we have options. I say now that the staff is somewhat solidified that yes we hit Texas harder but if high caliber players in Texas still stick their noses up at us then we should go where we are wanted an not settle for 2nd or 3 rd tier WAC, CUSA, and Sunbelt players. We will do it one way or another. GO SMU.

Not true at all. The 7 on 7 at SMU is how we found Dieter.

Where players are from doesn't matter as long as they can play and as long as they want to be at SMU. The kids who have decommitted wanted to play for Klemm. Some will, some won't, although I'd like to hear Mora's explanation about how UCLA is going to beat USC with players whose best offer was from SMU, and also had offers from places like Stony Brook. Whatever. Those kids are water under the bridge. Good luck to them. Plenty of other players to be had. Go get them, coaches!

Not accurate-4 Klemm commitments now are 4 stars on Rivals or Scout. He's got 7 now

We recruited West Coast because that was where we could get the best players. To get local players SMU has to win games. To win games we need the best players. It is taking time to take the kind of steps needed. However, with the addition of Coach Phillips we have a strong coaching staff. In addition, look what is coming our way...some good transfers and Junior College players with experience, a couple of Prep All American players and many more 3 stars than 2 stars. Lastly, I am convinced that the BE is the best conference for us to play in at this time. We could get some great publicity and Bowl games if we can win the majority of our BE games. The future is bright! PONY UP!

It's amazing how these kids are committed to an individual, and not a school. Especially if the one recruiting them is not their position coach. I understand Hulick leaving because he wanted to play for Klemm, but the others, it is silly.

to get local players you actually have to offer and recruit them.
