Going Elsewhere- Moton Hopkins and Matt Williams

Postby Stallion » Fri Jan 07, 2005 12:08 pm

Rivals reports that DE Moton Hopkins, San Antonio has committed to Tulsa and LB Matt Williams of Round Rock to UTEP. Hopkins had already visited and reports from the "insiders" claimed SMU wanted him very badly. Matt Williams was scheduled to visit on Jan 21. Both were virtual unknowns to the recruiting services. BTW there are 122 players rated 3 stars or better by Rivals-SMU has yet to get a commitment from a single one. There are approximately, 153 with a rating of 5.4 or better-SMU has got a commitment from one 5.4 player(Allison)

That's pretty impressive about the Williams kid. You'd think that with the rebirth of UTEP football this year with Coach Price, he'd be recruiting some impressive players. So if this guy really is just 205 pounds and playing DE, he must be pretty impressive. Good luck to him.

Hmmm .... I thought if we lost Hopkins, we'd lose him to Rice, not Tulsa.

Why encourage Johnny Rock? He is rarely anything other than a parrot. He is just a negative troll that tries to hide it by repeating the things that you and others say so that he comes across as smarter than he really is. I doubt he truly understands discussions of admission requirements or standards or other eligibility issues. He just wants to [deleted] and moan.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Have these guys committed anywhere?

Postby DallasDiehard » Fri Jan 07, 2005 12:39 pm

OL Barret McCraw
OL Jontae Bragg
OL/DL Quinton Johnson
DL Brian Haywood

Anyone know? All four of them are big and strong and at least at one point have expressed serious interest in SMU.

Oh BTW I should have pointed out that Williams will still visit Texas State on Jan 14 and SMU on Jan 21-but he states he considers himself committed to UTEP.

it is starting to really seem like Tulsa is cleaning our clock. We havent had a commit in weeks and they have gotten several guys just in the last week that we apparently offered. Hope we have some tricks up our sleeve out there.

Tulane has 3 commitments from Texas recruits SMU offered and who are from our home Metroplex-although we may not have given up on those recruits yet-plus several other nice Texas recruits. Bothersome.

Are any of those Tulane commitments among the bunch coming in this weekend? Hopefully we can convince one (or more) to switch!

I thought the purpose of that silly contract extension was to actually help recruiting?

Hey jt, the fat lady hasn't sung yet. Verbal commitments are non-binding. I suspect that if the coaches really want a player, they aren't going to quit trying to persuade that player to come to SMU just because he has given a verbal some place else unless they know without a doubt that they have absolutely no chance. Players make last minute switches all the time. We may not get any, but it ain't over until it is over (signing day).

Why do so many get upset at my posts? The facts are the facts. Stallion's thread tells it all. Anyone can look at the DMN list to see very few local / area recruits commited to SMU (the home town school) and we have none from the top 100 state list. SMU, time and time again, misses out on top quality players which explains are poor records. I do not believe any expects us to compete with BSC conference schools for recruits. I do expect to get one or two, at the very least, every year that the BCS schools want. I also expect SMU to hold their own against Tulsa, UTEP, Rice, La. Tech, especially for the home town recruits. So far we are getting shut out for those players. Things do not look good on the hilltop. And by the way, it is not my fault. I do not make the rules over there. All of the 'sunshiners' can now continue to tell me that I do not know what I am talking about. When you do that please refer to Stallion's thread.

Gotta say I am not surprised to be bumping up against UTEP - and we will win some and lose some one that - but anyone picking Tulsa over SMU is just stupid. Lets face it - not many players from either team are going pro - do they want to have a degree they can use to better their lot in life, or not? This is their shot and they are blowing it.

I know I am biased but how can anyone go to El Paso and say" Damn, This place is freakin awesome"?! I have to fly through and it is a hole. Mike Price is Coach of the year-I am not questioning that but you look at Dallas, education, campus, facilities and babes?!
Tulsa-your a notch above El Paso-barely

Hopkins is supposedly a really good student and wants to major in petroleum engineering, which Tulsa has a great program in this. We don't have one at all.
