SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT TONIGHT\"S GAME....I'm not expecting much of a crowd since the avg person would have no way of knowing there's a game tonight, no advertising, few students, etc. But it is the most important game of the year so far, against the defending WAC champs, and I know most people that read this board will be there anyway, but tell your friends, family, etc., lets get enough people out there to make a difference.
P.S. Women play Nevada in Reno tonight at 9, going for a 13-1 record and 4-0 conference start.
It was extremely small. You had to be looking for it to find it and it didn't even mention the start time.
..some / most of the posts seem to want to blame the DMN for our lack of "fans knowing about the games.."..interesting. Doesn't the Marketing Dept mail our schedules to the alums? E-Mail reminders to Mustang Clubbers / season fball holders / dallas alums? Numerous billboards around town with a "changing message" feature to alert of upcoming games? ADS in the DMN? Not sure those "scums" at the DMN are the problem.....If we don't have 4500 tonight (half full), for this big WAC game, I am afraid it is just ANOTHER statement to the health of this athletic program....long live Sonny Allen..packing the house with losing teams...hhhmmmmmm??
it's a really sad state of affairs, no question about it. We can only hope that coach Tubbs (and Bennett for that matter) are the guys who can eventually recruit teams that will rekindle interest in SMU sports. There's just no reason we shouldn't be drawing 7500 for games like this and Ford should regularly see 25-30k in attendance.
Long live Gene Phillips!
One issue with it is that the SMU COMMUNITY DOES NOT CARE. Most students would rather spend their Saturday nights binge drinking and vomiting over the floor instead of cheering for their team. We have lacked near total school spirit for the last 5-10 years, and it is getting worse. People want to show up and cheer against Bobby Knight; that's it.
Even a bunch of alums probably ge tired of seeing the Mustangs lose. Now, this isn't any excuse of course; go watch the LAdies because they've been dominating recently. I honestly and truthfully believe that the die-hard pony fan makes up about 3% of the entire SMU Community. Stupid Texas, OU, and A&M generate an average 70% easily. Ugh. Stupid kids. Rock AND Roll
and that's the bottom line. Too many completely apatheitc students at SMU today. Apparently even more Buffys and Jodies than were there in my day.
Re:
At least 70% of students at SMU ARE diehard fans. Diehard Texas, OU, or A&M fans.
true confession: I pulled for UT long before I ever considered attending SMU. Once on the hilltop, I became a fanatic and we didn't exactly dominate anything in my years ('70-'74) But... I will confess to having a sickness not many do. Long live the 1500!

During the five years I was at SMU, Texas and A&M were are arch rivals and NOBODY supported them. In fact I can't recall anybody supporting another college team and, again, I lived on campus for 5 years. It is incredibly said to see and hear what has happened to the campus from an athletics standpoint.
Re:
I assume you were here back in the SWC. You could consider those teams rivals. Now, they aren't considered in the same league as us. I can't stress this enough - SMU does not feel like a big time program. We feel as though we are already DI-AA. Nobody considers rooting for UT to be rooting for an enemy. It is no different from going to Sam Houston State and rooting for SMU. You are rooting for something totally different.
