I too almost ditched SMU
I am back.. I was getting tired of the total lack of appreciation of coach June Jones and it was brought to a head when the team began to show it's disgust of the lack of support it was receiving after beating TCU and UCF. Jones was fed up, looking to move on and I was too.. get away from all the negative energy, much of the source is published on Ponyfans. It is counterproductive and a hindrance to the team and school goals.
After dropping Ponyfans for a month, I tuned in and watched the Mustangs tune up Pitt. I did not expect to see the Mustangs bring such a fight. What impressed me more was what Bryce had to say after the game.. his praise and acknowledgement of all his teammates and humble omission of his own excellence.
Then, the student of June Jones became the teacher and looked into the camera and spoke to all ponyland. He said in effect "June Jones is the best thing that has ever happened to SMU" and that ponyland needs to get behind and fully support June Jones and his staff. Bryce and his teammates have experienced Jones mentoring, his molding of kids to men, his preparation of kids to step off the playing field and into real life and be prepared vocal confident leaders. All lessons much more valuable to the student athlete than the win loss record. Those and more are the reasons why I follow and why I am fascinated, admire and highly respect June Jones.
I like seeing the effect June Jones has on those kids who take the next step to the NFL. Their superior understanding of how to deal professionally with the Media. The knowledge and confidence comes from the training and mentoring of June Jones, his personally selected staff, and their combined NFL coaching experience and techniques. A great example is what Davone Bess is doing in Miami both on and off the football field and in the press. Colt Brennan and now Mr. Bigtime Sterling Moore. Don't you think Belicheck and Jones talked, I do, a good word and even maybe a promotion call to Bill. I think Jones takes an interest and helps his players every way he can after they leave SMU. Now in another couple of weeks we will see Sterling deal with fame and how he responds. Is he ready, has he been prepared for the pressure of success and adulation? I think he is ready for success..
Now for those who complain about Adrain Klem leaving and taking all the recruits and all the recruits who have left recently... do you think he was happy with Ponyfans and their attitude? What soured him on SMU? Oh, he was home sick....... Why can't Jones fix the problem regardless of Ponyfans negativity and AK opinion of SMU? The Reinbold situation, if there is one, why would the surfer dude be considering leaving? Now the harping on recruiting by those who would better serve their school by trying to put a positive spin at least until the results of recruitment takes place and then bring forward positive suggestion without their ignorant hate and name calling. Look in the mirror...
I say to you... Don't you think any kid considering SMU is reading this forum? Don't you think they are smart enough to get a bad taste from a pervasive vocal hatred of the coach and plain old lack of respect by many and little praise of his accomplishments to date at SMU? Don't you think they are smart enough to reconsider getting involved with a school that the team calls out for a lack of respect and appreciation. All this fire the coach because he is not happy with the above mentioned behavior and is not dancing to the dress code and all the traditions of losers for the past twenty years. The immature hatred of the islands, leis, June Jones personal identity and personality.
So I say to all you who fit that box you should wise up and understand the effect you have on the school and football program. I am proud of Mitch for recognizing the team's view of their coach and softening, accepting their view as legitimate and indicating his support with disagreement for coach Jones. Mitch and a few others are leaders on this board and have power in what in what parents and recruiting prospects see and base some, and maybe more than you want to think, of their decisions on when considering SMU. This power has responsibility which should work to keep in check those with destructive behavior to SMU's goals.
I for one appreciate and enjoy all the Ponyfans who are passionate, very knowledgeable and involved in raising SMU from the death house. I hope you too take a stand against those who are trying to ruin everything with hateful and negative comments about the coaching and team, even though they are not smart enough to understand the consequences of their own actions.
I want to see grateful and greatness..

Great post Doe. I have also found myself not checking the board quite as often lately due to the negativity that is on here daily. I am not against being critical of our coaches and complaining about the recruiting but after a while it is just tiresome to read. Klemm is gone and the constant whining on here about him blows my mind. Some on here i think would leave their wife to be with him and there is something wrong with that.

Agree that June wants/expects/deserves more fan support than he has gotten. It must be incredibly frustrating to have no Marketing Department and minimal local press coverage of your team. If he quit, I am completely sympathetic to his gripe that this team's turn-around hasn't exactly caught the SMU fan base on fire, but I also don't think he could quit thinking "I fully implemented my program and gave it my all." We aren't operating the run-and-shoot the way it was being run during his last 3-5 season at Hawaii, he hasn't developed a QB capable of running his offense fully and his team, at times, has looked under-prepared. Please don't lay those deficits down at the feet of the fan. If they thought their job was done with getting to their third Brando Widget Bowl, they grossly underestimated the injury that the DP and 25 years or watching ineptitude has caused this fan-base.

June will gone this time next year, will you be following him to his next destination?

Yes. Also, the people on this board go to all the home games, yell loud, donate and even travel. We don't have to accept everything at face value shoveled to us just because he's done a lot of good things for the school and the players individually. Compared to other fan boards, we're tame.

Re: I too almost ditched SMU
I can also say that I've meet Reinebold several times and can relate that he was fully aware of the uphill climb at SMU and enjoyed the challenge because we talked about that specifically. If he goes anywhere, it's because it is a promotion and he loves to coach and wants to at a higher level again. I don't know Klemm's story, but UCLA is beautiful, Pac12 and home for him. To insinuate they quit/are quitting because of several posts on Ponyfans is ridiculous. There easily is a 2:1 positive to negative post ratio on Ponyfans anyway and anybody who has cruised other fan message boards knows that Ponyfans is all sunshine and rainbows by comparison. I also doubt most SMU students are aware that Ponyfans even exists and ESPN/Scout/Rivals message boards are much more likely stopping places for recruits and families to happen upon than Ponyfans...unless they are guided here by alumns or staff...which I doubt very seriously they do.

Spot on post.
If you have something negative to say, put it in a PM and send it on. We all question a call or a position a player was put in sometimes but it is hard to read this board when it is nothing but negative.
If you really want to help SMU " TALK IT UP" not bad mouth.
Jump on the band wagon or better yet come help pull the band wagon.... but please don't put bumps in the road for others to overcome.
What a freaking team effort against PITT - Kicked their rumps. YEAH MUSTANGS

Re: I too almost ditched SMU
If you love something, and want it to grow and to succeed, it is perfectly natural to grow frustrated when it falters or under-achieves or makes a bad decision, etc. I'll RahRahRah with the best of them but I also hold SMU to a high standard and will not tolerate easily those who take it in any other direction. That's not a direct accusation against anyone, just a fact. Regardless, it's clear that anyone who wastes their time posting on here loves SMU, that we all want the best for it and anyone cruising Ponyfans (recruits, students, alumni, parents) should be reading even negative posts in that light.

Re: I too almost ditched SMU
Idiot. There was little negativity on this board after the TCU victory and the only negativity after UCF was about attendance. The board turned negative when the team looked horrible at USM and Tulsa.
On attendance at UCF: It is well documented that competing events, including the Rangers making a best-ever run, drew away the casual sports fan and some SMU fans who wanted to watch a historic series vs standard college football game.
The people left who attended UCF were real SMU fans. Guess what? That's all there are. There isn't a big pocket of SMU fans who choose to not go to games. There just aren't many fans. If Jones hasn't figured this out, he is clueless. If Jones cannot handle it and needs crowds NOW vs building it by making relevant runs of wins against real opponents (such as the Pitt win), then he needs to leave and let us replace him. Otherwise shut up and deal with it.
