He could have handled the ASU situation, and now this recruiting fiasco somewhat better. Either way though, without the man, there is no Big East. He has elevated the recognition of SMU to a level it hasn't seen in decades. Those in the academic sectors of the school are also benefiting from June.
You are right about Jones. People are always going to snipe at any head coach who doesn't win every week and we have to live with that. My complaint is with people on this or any other board who are immature enough to criticize an injured kid like JJ McDermott and call him a "clown." Can't help recruiting to exhibit that kind of childish criticism of our players.
If you have something negative to say, put it in a PM and send it on. We all question a call or a position a player was put in sometimes but it is hard to read this board when it is nothing but negative.
If you really want to help SMU " TALK IT UP" not bad mouth.
Jump on the band wagon or better yet come help pull the band wagon.... but please don't put bumps in the road for others to overcome.
You know BUS, I think it is that attitude by SMU's most faithful that directly contributed to 20+ years of complete misery here.
We are paying this man top dollar. I think SMU has the ability to be a dominant force in the BE, but we won't accomplish it with classes that JJ looks to be producing this year. Things are moving crazy fast in the college football world; time is not our ally. We have to be good NOW.
Let's see how it plays out, but this looks to be a class below PB standard.

You asked for a suggestion (see above). I agree with you that we do not (I repeat, "do not") live in China (or North Korea). And, just for the record - if anybody is keeping records - I have never failed to receive a "Reply" from June Jones, Steve Orsini or any other personnel in the athletic office or SMU administration for that matter. Keep trying - your opinion on pf goes nowhere.
I presume you mean the Rangers were on a historic run and the Mustang UCF game was just a ho hum college game.
To just about everyone in DFW other than the 10k real committed SMU fans, yes. It was a game for a team they either don't care about or only marginally care about (SMU) vs a team they really haven't heard of before (UCF) that may be key in finding out who will win a conference they don't care about (CUSA) full of teams they have never heard of before (UAB, USM, etc) or view as 3rd rate and pathetic (Rice, Tulane, Tulsa, etc).
What exactly about that game draws in the average person in Dallas who isn't a big SMU fan?
couch 'em wrote:Idiot. There was little negativity on this board after the TCU victory and the only negativity after UCF was about attendance. The board turned negative when the team looked horrible at USM and Tulsa.
If Jones cannot handle it and needs crowds NOW vs building it by making relevant runs of wins against real opponents (such as the Pitt win), then he needs to leave and let us replace him.

Thanks Bergermeister, I will keep trying and see what I get. We are all fans and we should act like we are on the same team. Pony up forever.
However, I disagree with you that opinions on pf.com go nowhere. Current players are excited about the nike renderings of our new pro combat jersey...but they came from a pf.com poster. Who knows...those drawings may get to JJ and SO and the higher ups at nike and it may become a reality...all because of a pf.com post.
We do know that SID reads ponyfans, and he has personally assisted me when I have needed help and requested some on ponyfans. So we are not on an island. But I do agree that a recruit basing a decision based on message board postings is a big mistake.
All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Why don't we just all agree to place the following legal disclaimer in our PF signature?
All comments, opinions and posts made by me on Ponyfans.com represent the ideas of myself, and myself only. They should not be misconstrued as general opinions of SMU or its fans. I am a nincompoop know-nothing who just so happens to be passionate about SMU and its Athletics and wants the best for its growth.

Statements like that need to be in a much smaller font size in order to adhere to disclaimer protocol.

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
There are definitely people with significance within the athletic program that read this board. I know of at least two C of C members, SID, and I suspect a few of the coaches read the board. Our voice on here is definitely heard.
Edit: and obviously Leigh Steinburg reads this board

The issue is many on Ponyfans want to hold on to the misery of the death house mentality. That mentality is holding SMU and the football team back and is destructive to the program. It includes ignorant hate of the coach rather than intelligent disagreement of football philosophy. How much of the ASU debacle was manufactured right here on Ponyfans? The issue is promoting the idea of firing the coach because you don't like the way he dresses, where he came from, talks to his QB during the game and the likes which could go on. The issue is there are people on this board who are perpetuating the old misery of the death house, it is their old friend, it brings them together for thousands upon thousands of posts.........
Jones broke that same spell that was in the minds of the Football Team, I witnessed it happen in two years.. It truly was amazing to watch. The third year the team started the season playing with confidence and then at UTEP slipped into a funk that for a moment it reminded me of a drunk falling off the wagon. The fourth year the Mustangs were playing expecting to win every game........... then they had another moment but it was not their play it was fan support... simple recognition... like a child who needs a pat on the back a hug and some love...
What did they get... crap like "the Rangers were making History in one of the greatest series since...." They let their feelings be heard and they did have a slump in the process... which the diseased used to justify their lack of support.... However, they regrouped as a strong confident team around their coach who they highly respect and believe in and ended their season with a huge victory.. Then Bryce turned and pointed the finger at those who love holding on to misery and gave some sound advice to those capable of understanding...... get behind your coach if you know what is good for SMU..
Jones has delivered the essence of what he was hired for... Not to the degree which he expects or aims to achieve but sometimes things don't play out the way or as quickly as coach Jones, his fans or his critics want them to. It often requires more effort, work, cooperation by everyone and it might require a little luck.. like Garret Gilbert being handed to us or like Kyle Padron finding the touch... it is going to happen..
I and most everyone appreciates disagreement and other points of view, I am willing to change my opinions. No one agrees with every call or decision but opinion should include giving credit where it is due and keeping your opinions within respect for the good of the program and not try to derail it.
SoCal_Pony said it well "I think it is that attitude by SMU's most faithful that directly contributed to 20+ years of complete misery here". That may very well be so but I would say it is changing, many have moved on from misery and it can be defeated. To get to where SMU wants to go it must be defeated and I am going to take Jones and the teams back and I hope there are others who will do the same because this can be fixed..
All I would like is JJ's best effort for us. I think there is compelling evidence that we did not get that at all times this year, E.g. Southern Miss, Tulsa, recruiting efforts, trip to hawaii, and the explosion of the ASU debacle regardless of the fact whether that was intentional or not. I would like nothing more than for June to have all the success in the world here. I'm not calling for his head, I just want him to pick up the pace and effort. I think that is fair to ask. I also do not think it is detrimental to the program to ask for it. Oh and I never almost ditched SMU because it is my school and I am a real fan.
