No he got his release after this semester started so his semester has already been paid for.

I always thought if you had a scholly and quit the team you had to pay. He doesn't deserve a free ride for this semester since he is a quitter.

Would you consider Garret Gilbert a quitter? :?:

Did GG pay for this semester at whoren U or was it free? IMO he had to pay since he is tranferring and got his release.

Also, I suspect that a person on scholly is expected to participate in fall or spring drills in order to continue his 'free' education. Therefore a player who quits and will not be on the team should be expected to pay his own way. The university owes him nothing if he is not on the team. Should not matter is he is a nice boy or not, popular or not.

I see your point, but I think it is different when a kid quits in the middle of the season. But I also think that it is wrong to label the guy a "quitter." I have heard others on this board refer to Bo Levi as a quitter but to Garrett Gilbert as a victim of circumstances. I hate to say it, but the biggest "quitters" at SMU are the so called fans who don't bother to buy tickets and show up on Saturdays. But that is another thread and another story.

They both got releases from their respective teams regardless of if the had to pay for a semester. Now since they both got releases from their teams does that make them both quitters?

If Padron did get his release, I'm sure it was not a surprise to him. I wish him the best of luck and thank him for his contribution to SMU football. Also I have to trust the coaching staff to do what is best for the football program as a whole. We do not know all of the details. If Gilbert or someone else is picked for the next starting quarterback, it would not be good for Padron to sit on the sidelines again. In my opinion, if he doesn't start for SMU, he could start some place else. And he should have two years of eligibliy left.

Can we please stop calling out Mustangs ... current, past and future?
Good luck to Padron, and let's support Gilbert when he gets here, whether he's the starter or not.

Not sure why every time we have a QB break records here at SMU we always sit them down the next year and then they transfer. Sorry to see him go, always liked him. Good luck Kyle and thanks for the Hawaii Bowl.

Breaking records here is overrated given the defenses we play and the offense we run. I'd love to have Pasting to start the year but as I've shown in a previous post the offenses under Willis we much better than Padron.

If he got a release, JJ probably didn't have him in his plans anyway. I guess he didn't get a medical redshirt for this past year where he played two plays and then got injured. I don't think you get that if you transfer even if it was still an option. So, he drops to FCS and see what happens there. Perhaps he can be the next Josh McCown. At least he isn't starting his own rock band.

Garrett Gilbert's presence has more to do with UT being weak at the QB position than their talent evaluation. Gilbert is supposed to be heading into his third year as a starter this fall, if he hadn't already turned pro. The guy was deemed the next great QB at UT and there wasn't going to be a lot of playing time for anyone else - look how they barely gave Gilbert any quality snaps in Colt McCoy's final year.

No legit, blue-chip QB prospect was going to sign with UT while Gilbert was supposedly entrenched as the starter. So you've got a project in Ash and a legacy in McCoy's little bro.

It looks like Gilbert has chased off another QB in Padron. Kyle Padron is no quitter, but he is smart. He could see the writing on the wall: Gilbert will be given the job this season. You only get so many years to play in college. You can't waste them on the bench if you're a quarterback. At other positions you can find your way onto the field, but there's only one QB and if you're not playing, you're not improving.

And I don't think JJ is just sitting around hoping Gilbert shows up. I'll bet they are in constant contact and making sure the commitment to each other is strong.

This is just reality for college QBs these days - no one sits around and waits their turn, because that turn may never come. SMU's QB depth is probably about average right now. Most teams have a starter and then a significant drop-off in experience or talent. It's not much different than the NFL.

My alma mater Sam Houston State needs an experienced QB. Bearkats went to the Division 1 FCS Championship game with a young team only to lose to North Dakota State 17-6. With someone like Kyle Padron at the helm I'm confident the Bearkats could return to the title game!

I'll always consider Kyle Padron a Mustang, though! His willingness to visit with fans - both young and old - and sign autographs are just a few of the examples of his class.

If Kyle does go to Sam Houston State, he'd be the 2nd SMU QB to transfer there since 2002 when Josh McCown took the Bearkats to the playoffs and set numerous school records!

Best of luck, Kyle! Wherever you go and in whatever you do!
