Stallion, we need you - I'm confident you can shed some light on this issue.
Re: Clarification re. Gilbert
Had Gilbert transferred as originally planned, he would have had to sit out 2012 season per NCAA transfer rules. That would have been his FOURTH year of eligibility.
He then would have had to ask for a Medical redshirt for the 2011 season - which, since he did not take a redshirt already, it would have been granted - allowing him to play in 2013.
For some reason, I think he thought he could get 2 years to play after transfer. But do the math:
2009 - Played vs. Alabama
2010 - Started
2011 - Played in 2 games, season ending injury (wink wink) - eligible for Medical Redshirt
2012 - Sit out per NCAA Transfer Rules
2013 - Last year of eligibility - period.
5 years to play 4.
(Only in the extreme situation where the 5th year you suffer a medical condition, early, are you granted the 6th year)
Upon realization of this (2 years), the other option became
2009 - Played vs. Alabama
2010 - Started
2011 - Played in 2 games, season ending injury (wink wink) - eligible for Medical Redshirt
GRADUATE
2012 - immediately eligbile (the 4th year of play)
Apply for Medical Redshirt
2013 - Another year eligible (although, he might be able to apply for the 2011 medical come this 2012 summer).
Pro-s and Cons of both -
Scenario 1: He sits out and learns the system, enrolls in Spring and gets a 2 springs and a fall to learn, but then has to beat out KP - the likely started in 2012
Scenario 2: Gets 2 years to play, but doesn't get a spring practice.
When he took Scenario 2, and KP quit, let's all read between the lines and agree that GG is the starter for 2012.

If Gilbert graduates from TU and plays here would not it be delicious irony that a TU grad chose to end his collegiate football career at SMU!
